Do winter tyres affect fuel economy on Green tec?

Featured Replies

I think most crucial thing is that it takes longer to get the engine to normal operating temperature when weather is cold. Cold engine needs more fuel to work.

Once engine has reach correct temperature it draws lesser fuel than at summer. That's because cold air includes more oxygen -> better efficiency. :nerd:

....the citigo reaches normal operating temperatures very quickly ....weather warm or cold.

Not really so quickly, when temperatures drops. It's because heater cools down the coolant fluid. Looks like temperature gauge doesn't tell the whole truth really.

Engine heating quickly.... mine doesn't takes ages to clear the windscreen on these winter mornings...

When heater can clear the windows it doesn't mean engine is warm.

When ambient temperature is 20c, engine get warm (90c) soon after 2km driving. Now when it's about 5c, it takes about 10km to reach 90c engine temperatures. I reckon oil is still cold at that point.

This for sure has its own effects for fuel economy. More than which tyres you are using.

Well i'm going to pick  the Greentech up from London so a good run back home if  i don't like it my garage friend will find me another one.

I have only seen the car on the net so looking forward to seeing it, and i have only driven a 60ps so should be fun finding out what the extra 15 hp does to the performance  :giggle: My tsi was a 86ps so there shouldn't be too much between them.

.At least i will know what it does to the gallon before i fit the winters. Thanks for all the info

Until over 4000rpm there is no difference between the 60 and 75PS versions - and using over 4000rpm won't help the economy one bit!

Got my winters on now. Will report back.

BTW got a good deal a Costco. 5 tyres for the price of 4. Michelin Alpin A4.

I've seen detailed specs for Continental Winter Contacts...

I can't remember which of their 'summer' tyres they were comparing with.

Worse case fuel economy at any temperature: 4% less

Break even point for fuel economy: 13°C

Improved fuel economy at 4°C and below: 2%+ (2% with no loss of traction, more if traction is lost)

Thought I would join the conversation, thinking of getting winters for mine 175/65R14 82T - read somewhere that you should go down a speed group is this true?

the best ones I think I can find - correct me if I'm wrong are

Continental ContiWinterContact TS800 71DB C,C

Dunlop Winter Response 2 66DB C,B

Goodyear Ultra Grip 8 67DB C,C

Nokian WR D3 69DB C,C

I was thinking of fitting myself? is it just better to get a garage to do them? if I was to do them myself and get some wheel covers could I do that?

I've bought some Michelin's 5 for the price of 4 at Costco. Works out at £47 a piece.

Hadn't really thought about it.... but whilst they were putting the wheels on.... I asked what do they do with the spare wheel....... Winter tyres are often have a directional tread pattern......

Spare is fitted for nearside puncture.... where you expect the nails, glass and miscellaneous debris.

I've just ordered a set of Goodyear Vector 4 Season tyres from My Tyres.  German Magazine Auto Bild described these as "exemplary".

I have full winter tyres on steel rims on my Yeti which is a legal requirement in Austria where we ski (and virtually so in Germany).  The difference on snow and ice has to be experienced to be believed.

While we may not have snow and slush for many days of the year we ahev enough cold days to make the difference.

It's not about being able to get further than anyone else on snowy roads, it's about being able to steer and brake more safely.
