Simple 1.4 Mpi 8V question.

Featured Replies

Just above and to the passenger side of the oil filter is a sensor.

What is it and can I get a replacement seal for it as ours is leaking a small amount of oil.

There's nothing in the Haynes manual...

To the right of the oil filler cap? ....then its coolant temp sensor.

Sorry if I didn't make it clear. Just above the oil filter on the front if the engine below the head gasket level.

I'm kind of thinking oil temp sensor and hoping the seal is the same as the coolant temp sensor as I have a spare one of those in the garage.

If im not mistaken i think its the oil pressure sensor.

Thank you. You are probably correct, but is anyone certain?

And what seal does it have?

I can't get a picture in daylight until Sunday as it's SWMBO's and she's at work all day tomorrow.

Does it have a single wire coming out of the connector?  Does the oil pressure warning light come on in the cluster if you disconnect it  with the engine running?

Think it's a metal (copper?) washer seal, M10 size, if it is the oil pressure switch.

Camshaft position sensor.

Maybe this wasn't such a simple question then!

Will try disconnecting it and taking a photo tomorrow when SWMBO is back in daylight.

I was right, looks like it uses a rubber o ring.

Here are some pictures looking down the front of the engine to help identify it.

This is a screen cap of the VAG workshop manual for the 1.4 MPI 8V engine. Note Item 5 "Camshaft Position Sensor", the Oil pressure sensor is further along the block, closer to the Bell housing.

Here is the location of the "Oil pressure Switch", Item 3

Thanks. That confirms it in my mind. Thank you for the screen shots.

Now to source a new seal and see if that stops the oil leak or whether its the other sensor - now identified as the oil pressure sensor.

On my old 1.4 MPI, the oil pressure sensor failed, and it was leaking oil through the actual sensor itself, so when i removed the loom connector oil was coming from the electrical contact itself, this fault first arose as the Oil warning light was flashing while driving. If your not having that fault condition, I would assume that it is just the o-ring around the cam shaft position sensor from looking at your photos.

Is there any oil on the engine block under the Coil pack? It could be a leaky valve cover gasket.

Im glad i was of assistance :)

There are no issues with any warning lights at all so I'm guessing it's just the seal (hopefully).

It needs a good clean though as oil was leaking from the head gasket (that's now stopped since I did the cinder head last summer) and from this seal.

When I did the gaskets I couldn't be sure if the camshaft position sensor seal was leaking or not. But as there's no oil above it and quite a but below it, then it must be just the seal now.

I think I'll look into the oil pressure sensor seal as well since there is quite a bit of oil over that side as well.

Everyone's been of help, your diagrams confirmed what fabrel said and made it clear for me.

IIRC The Oil Pressure sensor doesnt have a seal, because its just a brass threaded part. which screws into the block. To be honest it was about £3 inc VAT from my local Skoda dealer, so it wouldnt harm to change it, i just drain a bit of oil out, fitted it, then topped the oil back up.

I'm pretty sure I have one of these two sensors and seal sat in the garage bought in case I needed it whilst changing the head gasket (we did a couple of oil & filter changes at the same time to clean out the engine of contaminants).

I'll have to dig it out and see which one it is before going to the dealer and ordering the other one.

Turns out it was the oil pressure sensor I had with the metal washer type seal.

Changed that and also checked the camshaft position sensor seal (which looked OK) but will order a replacement as soon as I can.

Tried cleaning up the front if the engine as it was caked in years of oil. Think I'll need something stronger like TFR perhaps.

Will report back when the car has driven a few miles and I know whether it is still leaking from one it both sensors.

Thanks for all the advice above.

Anyone know the part number or specs for the O-ring seal on the camshaft position sensor (item 4 in the first picture above)?

That seems to be the only leak left now.

Maybe 8A on this diagram?  17x2.5mm?

That looks like the badger.

Thanks for the link and quick response.
