Job preservation?

Tomorrow is going to be 11 degrees....

Im lost here

what's the forecast overnight minimum?  Usually anything around 4 degrees or lower will get them out gritting. :)

Looking a bit nippy!

Hmmm i suppose

Says 4 degree's but its still 9 right now and its 23:15

I thought it seemed reletively warm tonight. Later on in the week is looking less cheery

I laughed last week when i saw them out on my street, next morning it had dropped to minus 1 over night and everything was icy.

Rochdale gritters are out everynight except when they actually need to come out, like when its snowing

They also get sent out when diesel spills are reported on the roads. Grit is a good way to cover it and soak it up.

It is the same here

When required they havent been out

Must be too cold and a health and safety risk

The best temp to put down 'Salt' is around 6*oC before the Temp then goes lower if that is the forecast.

The intention being the 'Salt' gets Moisture from the Surface, turns to Brine (Liquid), stops the Moisture on the Surface Freezing.

It stops ice forming until a Lower Road/Air Temperature then reaches the modified Freezing Point..

If you put the salt down too late & the Temp is already at or almost at freezing, then it sits as Granules on the surface and requires wheels on roads or footfall on pavements to crush the Salt.

Gritting, Course Salt, someplaces maybe Salt/Sand Mixed.  all a bit confusing to some,

not to the Professionals.

Salting roads has not much to do with Snow,  you plough snow aside and 'Treat/Grit/Salt' the surface left,

Grit on Hard Frozen & packed ice can be useful.

Salt or Chemical put down at the correct Air & Ground Temperature is pretty essential.

So 'Gritting'/Salting & Treating roads needs some thinking about.

Sunday Afternoon/Evening in Scotland and not much happening on Scottish Trunk roads with 'Gritting',

They are well aware of tonight and tomorrow mornings forecast for some areas,

EG,  the difference between South of Perth & North within 20 miles was around 10*oC from 13*oC to 3*oC

They might get their buts into Action as the temp drops, they will need to.

They like the Staff to get on Double Time, and they will hold off so they do not Turn out until

the Higher Hourly Rate later on.

Also they will wait until the really bad weather and then tell some, Take Your Holidays now.

'Use them up before the End of the Year'.

Then 'they' will cry, Driver/Crew Shortages'.

I had a talk from the co-ordinating head honcho type for the SW HIghways gritters at my advanced driving group earlier in the year.  They get the most sophisticated reports from the Met Office to know what is happening, and prepare for it.  I was surprised at what went in to it. :)
