SD card Formatting

Featured Replies

I've been struggling with a problem that I have now solved so thought that I'd share it. I have my music on SD cards for use in the Columbus -I recently changed from a 32gb card to a 64gb card. Some of the albums in FLAC format no longer played from the new card (however some do and MP3 is fine as well). Also I have been able to copy the unplayable files from the 64gb card on to the Columbus' hard drive and play them from there but not from the 64gb card directly. I have nailed it down to a formatting issue -the 32gb card was formatted to FAT32 and the 64gb card formatted to EXFAT. I have cured the problem by formatting the card to NTFS and now all works fine again.

So flac files do work? Never bothered trying as I read they didn't play.

FLAC files definitely work on Columbus -not played with the Amundsen and Bolero so can't speak for those

AFAIK only the MIB Columbus supports FLAC

I have also ordered a Columbus, what type of SD card did you use for the 64GB eg SDXC? And what class / speed did you use? Also have u got album art to display, if so did you use embedded images or a file / .jpg with a certain name etc? Cheers.

As far as I am aware SDXC is the only format that supports > 32Gb, discovered my reader only supports SDHC when it could only see the first 32Gb of the card (which is the limit of SDHC).

SDXC does not refer to the file structure format, you can still format the file structure of card to whatever you like. USB card readers are very cheap (cheaper than the higher capacity cards at any rate).

I use a SanDisk Ultra 64GB SDXC UHS-I Class 10 Card. Most of my Music is downloaded from the internet and has the album art already provided, however the Columbus also has the Gracenote database in it's sat nav updates and if it recognises an album will use the artwork from its thumbnail database. The unit doesn't seem to tie up a jpeg of the album cover when it's in the same folder as the music.

Cheers mate, I will order one from amazon... I didn't want to waste my money on one that didn't work with the system....
