DIY servicing

Featured Replies

just been quoted £210 for front brakes and service, mates rates. so i may have to have a bash myself :-/

Cost me £96 for front discs and pads from euro recently using their discount code. Castrol oil and genuine oil filter was almost 50quid. If their doing air filter and pollen filter as well then add on another 15-20quid. I would say the price they've quoted isn't that bad to be honest if their replacing all of the mentioned parts.

I'd walk if there were missing services or diy services or want a considerable discount as I have no way of knowing that the work was done properly, safely or at all. Receipts for parts are meaningless, as there is no proof the work was actually done or the parts were used at all.

At least with a garage stamp you can make a more informed decision as to whether they have a reputation for good or bad work and have a degree of comeback if there are any issues relating to their work or lack of.

Well I had mine dealer serviced up until 40k miles. At no point was the pollen filter or air filter ever replaced. I have now changed them myself and will do every 10k miles along with oil and oil filter. Have all reciepts and noted the mileages on them as opposed to a service book that just has a stamp and a couple of ticks in various boxes. Oh that's right though you'd still want my car (which is serviced more often) to be far cheaper when I sell it than the "dealer serviced" car that is supposedly better ( and probably been on variable servicing!). Yes someone could easily have made up reciepts but it not hard to tell if the car has been well looked after and the parts actually changed.

Is interesting those who don't have an issue with diy servicing dislike variable services.

I'd take variable services (providing it was on variable as per VAG guidelines) over diy for the reasons I posted above.

Interesting. So in your opinion a car serviced every 10k miles is no better than one serviced every 20k miles? In particular I wouldn't run a diesel till 20k miles without an oil change due to how dirty the oil gets. Also interesting that it was recommended to change air filters at 10k mile intervals a few years ago and yet now they have extended it to at least 20k when, as far as I can see, it is still the same paper filter being used but can now last longer?? Everyone entitled to their own opinion I suppose. I'll admit that a dealer will favour the car that has dealer history but by the time I sell my cars theyve always done well over 100k miles so sell them privately and as stated never had any issues selling them.

Our Octavia had variable services without issues (6 years, 80k)

Works car is 2 years old this week and 80k all variable.

So long as you follow the VAG guidelines on variable use, there shouldn't be any issues. The only issues I've heard /read about is when someone who should be on fixed intervals uses variable (ie less than 10k/year)

I tried to get a better price off a dealer when I traded in a vehicle because it was well looked after and had a full dealer history. They said it makes no difference and offered book price.

I service my other vehicle myself every 5000 miles with genuine parts and oil. Going to start doing the same with the VRS.

Also, I have had services done by dealers in the past and no evidence of filters being changed when they should have been. Doing it myself, I know whats done and that its done right.
