Exhaust Warning Light on and Glow Plug Light flashing from time to time

Featured Replies

Got a 40,000 mile service and a MOT done on my 2.0 Diesel Yeti (at independent garage) a week last Friday.

Twice on Saturday, during 30 mile trips, the Glow Plug Light began to flash but stopped when I switched ignition on and off. Car was also intermittently well down on power.

On Sunday, seemed fine initially then Exhaust Warning Light came on and stayed on. Engine definitely well down on power all the time now (presumably in limp to specialised dealer mode) and fuel consumption poor.

Any suggestions about what is going on and what I should ask garage to do?

Or should I take it to a Skoda Dealer?

My initial guess would be a DPF sensor.

It'll need plugging in for a diagnostic check.

It's worth checking the engine oil level just in case it has been overfilled during the service. Excess oil can be burnt causing DPF issues.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Checked oil level which was OK.

Yeti in garage today for diagnostic check.

Waiting to hear but they did mention the possibility of cleaning out the DPF " which works 90% of the time".

I replied that the DPF light had not come on and that the sensor may be at fault......

Any more comments?

It may work well 90% of the time if the DPF is approaching "full" but will not cure a faulty sensor.

Afterthought - It may be easier to clean DPF than to check sensor :mmm:

Independent garage said that Turbo was not cutting in but they did not think it was faulty- more likely that computer was not allowing it to operate because of a DPF sensor problem. They suggested that I contact a Skoda dealer for a full diagnostic and made no charge..

Managed to get it booked in this morning to a Skoda dealer. They "carried out guided fault finding via Odis for warning lights on, fault logged for boost control valve on turbo. Repair kit is required for turbo as per TPI £285.59 inc"

They did not have the parts but charged me £78 for the diagnostic check..

Not sure whether to follow latest advice. All warning lights are out now, bit engine still well down on power.

An expensive repair to my turbo-charger now underway, allegedly caused by the wrong oil being used.

I will keep you posted....

Ooo, err!  A cautionary tale?  I once got a little dischuffed with an independent I used (once only), when on collection, they couldn't tell me what oil they had used in my DPF equipped Renault. I also "moved away" from a franchised Renault dealer with the same car, when they couldn't tell me what materials they had used either, but did assure me, and showed a check sheet to "prove" it, that they'd checked the spare wheel and it had 8mm of tread.  It didn't have a spare, just the usual can of mousse!  I had to take the Service Manager to the car, and ask him to show me the spare they had checked, before he accepted my assertion that his check sheet was a work of fiction!

Did the garage who did your 40K service in November give you documentation as to what oil was used?

This story does re-enforce my personal view, that I would rather do oil changes myself every 9k. Not so much from the saving money perspective, but more because then I have peace of mind that the correct oil and filters have been used!  Cheap insurance to my mind.
