2.5 TDI AUTO GEARBOX HARD TO GET PAST REVERSE

Featured Replies

Hi Motor Engineers, I no nothing about cars so can someone please advise me on my question as warranty is nearly out.  I have Superb 07 plate and at times I put the car into reverse move back a little way, stop take it out of gear into park.  Go to put it back into reverse and it,s hard to get it go through into reverse, although it does go.  It only happens when I start out.  Its very intermittent as I have had the car for 10 months and it,s done it say 15 to 20 times.  Can any of you fine engineers tell me the problem please, if there is one.

Kind Regards To You All Graham

Hello Graham  :hi:

I'm no motor engineer by a long shot, but let's start with the obvious - it's not to do with not having your foot on the brake is it? (just making sure the solenoid lock light goes off)

The detents on the gear shift do wear, but if it's under warranty, why not just take it back and ask 'em to fix it?

Gaz

Is the button on the shifter loose (wobbly)?  I think that needs to work well also to be able to shift through the gears.

I had mine replaced under warranty - it worked mostly ok but I could tell it would die eventually.

If you don't hear the click when you put your foot on the brake to come out of park, perhaps your brake pedal switch is problematic.

Thanks Gaz and Jim I will have both looked at Kind Regards Graham

The other thing to bear in mind (apologies if this is sucking eggs, I only twigged a few months into owning the car) is that on this box if you are still rolling a little when you go into park it will be really quite hard to get out of park - or even the vehicle's own weight rolling onto the park brake.  The proper procedure I believe (which I sometimes forget) is

1) reverse or drive

2) foot on foot brake to a stop

3) handbrake on

4) into park

If you don't put the handbrake on before park the car rolls onto the park brake and it feels like a ratcheting tool stuck on (if you know what I mean) and then it is very hard to get out of park.  Quite well known on this gearbox I believe.
