vRS Oil Montoring Results

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Its been a while since I have been on the forum, but I wanted to revist this issue of oil burning vRS's..   So I have been pretty good at keeping a record of what I put in my beloved vRS and the readings are as follows (1/4 oil every 1,100 miles) :

So my question is (before the warrenty runs out in June 2014), should I be going back to the Skoda dealer and making a fuss of the amount of oil my car is using or is this in the acceptable limits of the car. (because we know that this type of car has a habit of burning oil here and there).

Also if I do go back to the dealer, what should I say and what should I ask them to do..

Thanks all, advice please...  oh btw, love the car besides its love for oil ofcourse!!!!

See attached excel spreadsheet for figures..

Are you not running with too much oil in, ie more than 3.6 litres?

Or are you running with too little oil in the engine.?

A cold dip if on the Top Orange Marker can not give an accurate reading,

OR IS IT SLIGHTLY ABOVE THE BOTTOM ORANGE BIT ?

a Hot Dip at normal operating temperature is not that accurate.

But a warm/hot/normal temperature is how 'they'  say to do it.

what does  1/4 mean, how many ml of oil was going in?

1/4 of 3600 ml is 900 ml.

If you where running around with oil getting used and then there is almost 1 litre less than the capacity before filling up thats pretty low.

eg, only 2.7 litres of oil in  the engine.

george

If it shows at this level on a hot dip, the Skoda & VW Owners manual tells you not to put in more oil.

They do not show a level for a cold dip on a 132kw engine.

Really simple..ignore all the statistics...LOL

Take it to the Dealer and get them to do a consumption check

They wont accept your own

Ours was solved in a month!!

New engine fitted FOC

They are now charging some owners for the cost of a Consumption test,

when they come back and say the engine is using only 0.3 litres in 621 miles. (1000 km) So within Acceptable Limits.

They are getting this figure by doing their test over only 300 km. (186 miles) or there abouts.

It is a nonesense and if you start with the correct amount of oil in, and drive in a normal sort of way,

you should know know much oil your car uses in around 1240 miles,  (2000 km)

**How many ml of oil you used. to keep the correct amount of oil in the engine.**

If it needs more than 1 litres in 1240 miles,,

or 0.5 litres per 621 miles, then you know they can not say it is within Acceptable Limits.

You need to question if 0.5 litres in 1000 km is even an acceptable use of oil,

just because they say that figure for every type of engine, 3 cylinder diesels, 4 cylinder diesels & petrols,

it is not a figure they make any buyers of cars aware of.

Someone doing 12,000 miles a year needing to or being expected to be put in 6 litres of oil between services would be ridiculous.

Example of another Members Consumption Test, & the Oil Weights are all wrong for the start of the test.

3.6 litres of oil weighs around 3100 grams as a max, . not 3643 grams.

Since the weights of the oil are a nonsense then this Test could never be Valid.

Or in anyway considered to be accurate.

& if VW/Skoda say 0.5 litres in 1000 km (621 miles), then  tests over 186 miles of constant driving and multiplying results

is no guide or indication to jack ****.

Anyone interested can maybe take an unopened 1 litre bottle of Engine Oil and put it on the scales.

or 4 litres, 5 litres etc unopened and weigh it, see if 1 litre still in a container weighs 1000 grams.

From what I've gathered from reading about oil consumption results, those who do the 300 mile "test" in one hit (one big journey) don't use their normal amount (based over several thousand miles) - hinting that there is some excessive usage from cold starts?

for starters, check it when warm, like the handbook says... I have often looked (out of interest) when cold, and got the level  at min, only to find the next day when checked warm its right at max....... I think there is a possibility people are over filling them...... I checked mine at work last night (1,000 miles after service) and it was at min, but it was cold, I garuntee if I check it when warm it will be right up there, I wont top it up, as I know it doesn't use that much (1 litre in forst 10k) ..

these are my observations ;)

Thanks all, a lot of info to diget,  in terms of right oil levels, I was always told never to fill it to the orange "blob bit".    the 1/4  Quarter of oil is in Ltrs..

When I brought the car at 2,500 miles the oil dip stick was at the bottom of the Orange blob..  over time it has gone done and when it was half way in the cross hatch area I topped it up to the top of the cross hatch (with 1/4 Ltr oil) and I have been doing that ever since, every 1,100ish miles.

Are we saying that I am running the car with not enough oil in it..

What orange Blob, i take it it is not the the bottom of the dip stick,

so the one up the stick way above the cross hatch area.

IS THAT WHERE IT SHOWED WHEN YOU FIRST DIPPED THE CAR WITH COLD OIL & AN UN-STARTED ENGINE?

(that is where i get a cold dip when i have 3.7 litres of oil in an engine.

that usually equates to the top of the Cross Hatch with a Hot dip, done after the oil has been up to at least 80*oC)

How much oil have you needed to put in, in Litres during the mileage you have covered.?

From 2750 - 9320 miles, so 6570 miles

Is it 1.5 litres in total put in ?

So about  25 % of what Skoda/VW say might be expected if you go by 0.5 litres per 621 miles./ 1000 km.

if its 250 mill per 1,000 miles, its not that much to be honest :)

Just looking at sk4gw photo of the dip stick..    When I brought the car, the oil (on cold) was just below the orange thing (above the cross hatch area).   When it went down into the cross hatch area (half way in the cross hatch area), I put in 1/4 Ltr oil, that took it above the cross hatch and then that process has been repeated.  Everytime it gets half way in the cross hatch area I put in exactly 1/4 Ltr oil to bring it back to just above the cross hatch area.

Am I not putting in enough?   Should I be putting oil right up to the bottom of the orange zone (above the cross hatch area)..    Figures are roughtly 1/4 (quarter) Ltr for every 1,100 miles...

Be very careful not to overfill.

Can you not just try Hot Dips only, once the oil has been heated up after at least 10 miles or so,

park on the level,  dip after 5 minutes and see where it is.

If you know its is in the top third below the cross hatch you are fine.

Then check where that is when you dip it after totally cold and several hours later.

?When is the car 3 years old?
and how many times has it been serviced now, did it get a service at the 1st 12 months & a 24 month Service,

is that twice it has had the oil and filter changed, or just the once before you bought it?

george

You car should be run upto operating temp switch off and left for 5-10mns then check the oil. Mist modern cars require the oile to be hot before an accurate reading is taken. Not the old way ie checking from cold. It clearly states this in the manual.

Sorry about the spelling. I was in a hurry.

Sent from my Windows Phone 8X by HTC using Board Express

It actually does not clearly state it in the Skoda Fabia Owners manual.

page 168

'on other engines when the engine is warm'

page 167,  'wait a few minutes and pull out the stick'.  all a bit not clear.  ie 'warm'  'few'

But in the VW Polo Owners manual for the same engines it is clearer. 'normal operating temperature'.

better Translation and different words in English used,   IMO.

You could be over filling it and each time it keeps burning off the excess.  Some don't agree with my principle of waiting until the low oil light comes on, but when it does come on, it gets half a litre.  Used less than a litre in 17,000 miles.

Your first engine had a burnt inlet valve at 22,000 miles though and the engine got replaced, & new Turbo & Cat .

Did you run it the same way, waiting for the Oil Warning light before putting in 0.5 of a litre of oil?

Yep.

First engine used 3 litres in 22k

Second engine used 0.5 litres (oil light came on once) in 17k (22k > 39k when it had its variable service).

Same laws applied.  Wait until the low level light came on.  It would be a very odd turn of events that could possibly connect a low oil level with a single burnt valve though.

You need to be sure a  'Oli Warning light' is going to come on,

and some have not come on when there is almost 1.5 litres less than the 3.6 litre capacity in

the engine.

You can look at the lights to see not faulty on start up, but you never can be sure the warning light will warn.

Just go to the dealer and get advice...simples

ChrisRs, that is good advice,

but considering how many Dealerships fail to send a Car out the Workshop with the correct amount of Oil in,

'Capacity 3.6 litres should be simple enough to do at Services or when filling a new replacement engine.

& considering how many Salespeople are clueless or just say High Oil Useage is normal.

Who do you get the Advice from & be sure it is the correct advice.

If a Garage doing an Official Oil Consumption Test can not follow a Technical Bulletin, get measurements and weights correct,

then there is little hope for safe advice.

george

Mine has now used 2lt in 6,500 miles from new, bit annoying.

Last 1lt was in 2,000 miles as well.

what is the potential damage of 3.6L + being put in ?

Thanks guys - I will defo do a hot dip test and let you know...

My car had its first service at 2,500 miles, it is on 9,320 miles now and its next service should be March 2014.   Warrenty expires June 2014

Hi all, I am back and can I say a thank you to all for your comments.

So I did a quick trip to the petrol station, on a cold start check, the dip stick reading was well under the half way cross zone area, when the car reached 53 degrees, I switched off and then checked the oil and I could hardly see anything in the cross hatch zone and barly some on the tip...   See my pic for representation..

OK,

the Oil going to 53*oC indicated on the Oil Temp is not 'Normal Operating Temperature'.

That is what some Skoda Dealerships are doing.

& why cars leave their Dealerships with different readings and Oil Levels.

If you want to do a 'Hot Oil Check' on a Twincharger,   Maybe do a journey, it might be 10 miles or so until it reaches 'Normal Operating Temperature,

an Indicated 88- 92 *oC.  (Above 80*oC is hot enough.)

That is a good time to do a Hot Check. Finish your journey, or stop,  and then after about 5 minutes, dip it.

Up to your self if thats how you are going to check each time, , but you can get all sorts of readings,

As long as there is enough Oil in and you do not overfill.

EDIT.

I WOULD THINK YOU HAVE NOT ENOUGH OIL IN YOUR CAR BY THE COLD DIP, IMAGE,  WHICH I CAN NOW SEE.

But sorry i am maybe still misunderstanding the diagram.

I would take the advice from 'ChrisRs',

ask a Professional Technician at a Skoda Dealership to show you how to dip it,

& confirm if you have 3.6 litres of oil in.
