power steering. ongoing problem!

Featured Replies

I have a fabia mk1. Ive posted before about this, long story short. Light on dash and heavy steering, topped up p.s.f still problem. Put car on ramps power steering pump damaged but not leaking whole under of car not looked after.. (ive only owned 2months getting round to fixing problems now) light went off for 2 days and lovely to drive again gone out yesterday back to being really heavy again but no light...yet. Obviously my 1st thought being power steering pump needs replacing, but is there something else his could be as its on and off all the time..? Before anyone says, ive tried all the code reader stuff and coming up with nothing.

If its intermittent I'd be trying the cheapest option first, the PAS Sensor. I'm sure there is a guide on here about this problem, I'll see if i can find it.

I knew someone with a Citroen Saxo who had power steering loss, turned out to be a dodgy pump.

To fix (temporarily) identify pump and with engine running and lack of power assistance, give pump a good dunt with the shaft of a hammer or similar.

If it's a jammed/dodgy pump you should hear it running if you manage to shock it into life.

Went out to car last week and was completely dead think might have been to do with messing around taking battery in and out days before trying to fill up powet steering fluid and put new lights in. So had a new battery fitted. And I know the clip connecter on the end of the loom is broken that links to the alternator so sitting where it should but not tightly clipped in place? Could this be relevant. As code reader says low battery voltage now.

Good Morning Midnight.*

Am I reading that correctly; the alternator cable is not secure? If so, then that may well be the issue, since the PAS pump uses considerable power.

* I've wanted to use a line like that since first reading about Mary Goodnight in the original Ian Fleming James Bond novels.

It may be relevant given the steering pump (if electrically driven) will use a fair current.

How's the rest of car? Poor to start, dim lights etc...

I'd prioritise alternator connector as a poor connection will prevent battery from being charged and you need good electrics.

Dont have any other problems besides this. Try cheapest option first. Will change power steering pump anyway as know casing is damaged and duct taped together by previous owner. I know fabia shares a lot of the same parts with Seat. Would the power steering pump froma ibiza be a match?

Get part number from Skoda then give it to Seat and see what they come up with.

I had to do this for brake caliper seals and rung round local Audi/VW dealers as Skoda had none in stock.
