Replacing dipped beam bulbs

Featured Replies

Had to replace a dipped/main beam bulb today. Blimey that was hard work. Drivers side wasn't too bad but passenger side was tough. I wished for small child's hands several times - mainly when I dropped the old bulb removing it and it was just out of reach under the headlight. Then again when I was trying to keep the new bulb in while closing the spring clip.

All in the work car park too so no reachy tools handy.

It is a bit fiddly, I've done it twice now, once with Osram Nightbreaker Plus and once with Philips X-treme vision, I prefer the Philips H4 bulbs as I think the dipped beam performance is better. Also replaced the H7 fog lights with Nightbreakers, much better with the brighter bulbs. Good idea to note the orientation of the bulbs as you remove as it makes them much easier to replace in the confined space.

Try changing the bulbs on a Smart ForTwo through the air intake grilles. By comparison the Yeti is a doddle.

Remove the fuse box cover it gives a little more room for us with hands like shovels  :giggle:

did mine Monday night deffo a pain but well worth it with the night breakers liked them that much got some for my van today

I will be thinking of getting Halfords to fit Nightbreakers  or similar. I believe they do the fitting for around £14 the pair. Now, are you all going to tell me not to let Halfords near it?

After reading all the problems with fitting new bulbs on the passenger side, I  had a Halfords fella fit their own 'ultra brilliance' H4's in mine today. The Skoda supplied H4's are truly dreadful. Why don't they spend an extra few quid and put in osram's night breakers or something equally as good?

So, Halfords did OK then ?

The near side one is difficult but i found it easier with a mirror and checking the outside of the headlamp to check the orientation of the bulb.

Yes, it didn't take them long to fit, made it look pretty easy actually. But if you're doing this everyday I guess you develop a 'knack'.

The bulbs themselves are not to bad, not as good as the Osrams etc, but overall a huge improvement. Had to drive back through a storm last night, involving sleet thunder and lightening, the new bulbs came in very useful

Halfords didn't seem to stock the Osram or Philips bulbs so I click &collected from eurocar parts £25 for Philips extreme vision

Had trouble trying to renew a new h7 bulb, took half an hour outside with cold hands and gave up frustrated! Went into the house for a warm and a think. Returned armed with a cotton bud with KY jelly on the end to lubricate the 3 spring clips, it must have taken about 5 seconds to locate the bulb and install!! couldn't believe it.
