Tyre pressure sensors

Featured Replies

I saw a thread on here a while ago about pressure sensors and people complaining about not having individual wheel mounted ones.

An update, talking to a friend who is a tyre fitter and has been for years, he has seen the good and the bad with sensors. Some work on a spirit level style sensor, some measure the revolutions (vrs I think) and some have individual wheel mounted ones.

He has come across problems with the latter, they get broken due to ham fisted fitters, they break due to the proximity of the sensor and the tyre bead when removing the tyre, he has seen ones fail due to poorly chosen materials and he has seen the price to fix the problem. In one case the valve was eighty quid and the transponder a couple of hundred!

The icing on the cake for me was the number of manufacturers who fit individual sensors but don't make the read out on the dash show which wheel it is!

I'll be happy with the combination of electronics and routine checking of pressures, when I get my car. Already got the winter tyres for it! Just hope the car comes soon so I can use them!

Well, to avoid risks, I suppose changing the tyres with your Skoda dealer for the time of your warranty :)

Im that case if they break it they have to fix it :p

Skoda don't fit wheel sensors and just go off wheel speed from the ABS sensors so it's a none issue anyway.

Yep neily03 that's the pont I was trying to make! There were plenty of folk on the other thread moaning about it being a second class system but I think it's a happy medium.

I was going to post a reply in the other thread about this but I'm lazy and this is on the front page!

After swapping to my winter tyres the next day a tyre pressure warning popped up - and it does tell you what wheel to check. So it may not have actual sensors but it can't be too bad. It was only 5 or so psi down too.

Nice improvement to TPMS on the Octy3 there then, like it

It is a second class system, but an awful lot better than nothing.

Very interesting; I picked up my VRS Estate on Tuesday; Winter tyres fitted on Wednesday at 60 miles and since then have had a problem with the TPS twice - it showed 'Error Tyre Pressure System'. Checked all four tyres both times, no loss of pressure. Called at Dealer, very helpful but thought it might be a slow puncture as apparently the new system is more sensitive than the MKII. BUT, there was no mention of an individual tyre AND it did say 'Error' - might I have a problem?

Have you run through the TPMS reset procedure? I presume you have.

Yes, thanks, it was done both times. Just keeping an eye on it now and will update this thread if the problem reappears.

The first time I drove on a motorway after getting my new Octy the tyre pressure warning came on even after I initially set the system up & checked the pressures. I re-set it & never seen it since. A friend who runs a Passat has had 2 sets of new tyres whilst being the owner & both times even with correct pressures set the warning came on. Guess the system needs to be re-set before it decides the pressures are fine.

Had mine go off late last night on the way home. It said that all 4 of them were at fault but I couldn't find anything wrong with them.

Anyway checked them today and it was right all 4 were at all different pressures and once I had done it and set it its been fine.

That's correct as it's not measuring pressuring pressure it measuring wheel speed.

Fitted winter tyres yesterday.

Car complained of the two near side tyres being incorrect pressure. Just assumed it was the tps playing up as it was new tyres.

Turns out kwik fit had actually put the wrong pressure in the two nearside tyres.

The new system is much better

Was the tps reset after the new tyres? Sounds like it wasn't.... If it was reset you shouldn't get an error even with incorrect pressures.

I doubt if the average Kwik Fit fitter would know that the car was fitted with a TPMS system, much less know how to reset it. I always check tyre pressures after a garage has changed tyres, even a manufacturer's dealership - they are invariably wrong....

I always do mine myself too, when cold at home.

Sorry.

No they didn't, which was fine. The less kwik fit touch the less they can break.

I went there as online they were the cheapest who actually had stock for the tyre I wanted.

It took about 10 miles for the tps to alert though.

You can check them hot too, just add 3psi to the flap values.

They'd be hot after 15 mins driving.

At what speed and outside temperature?

At what speed and outside temperature?

30mph or higher and above freezing.

If you're playing Devils advocate, then you surely only check pressures at the exact same temp, or what allowances at what temps do you allow ;)

This is the problem for any TPMs system and when it goes off.

For example in the high heat of summer the tyres will be a different size than in the very cold winter.

For example in the high heat of summer the tyres will be a different size than in the very cold winter.

But if you set your pressure in summer and don't touch then till winter you're pretty irresponsible. I set mine when cold for the current ambient temperatures.

I choose summer and winter as it is easy for people to see/understand the difference in tyre size.

If you were to follow the advice of the Highway Code you would check the tyres and reset TPMS before every trip.

In the Fabia I decided to check the system and deflated one tyre by 10psi and went for a drive and no warning.
