Xbox kinect info please

Featured Replies

Hello, thinking of buying a kinect second hand as they are very cheap now so worth it just for the laugh.

There are some I've found for sub £30, one of the descriptions says for xbox slim only.

Couple of questions for those in the know!

Firstly, will kinect work on the original xbox 360? From what I've read it will, but you need a USB lead - do I need to buy this separately? And is this it? :

Secondly, is there a kinect that is just for these 'slim' models? I tried googling it but couldn't really find a direct answer to this! Don't want to buy the wrong one by mistake....

Thanks for any help :)

My old white 360 never had a connection for the kinect in the back of it. My black slim one did and it also came with connect. Best thing to do is have a look at the back of your xbox and see if has one. Try google for pics of what it should look like. :)

Here's the installation info from the Xbox official site (scroll until you reach the original 360 bit) It uses a standard USB of which there is one in the back (you'll have to relocate your wireless adapter if you have one though)

Oh and I saw preowned Kinect sensors with Kinect adventures for £10 yesterday in game

Ooh a tenner? That's worth a look then!

This is the back of 'my' Xbox (actually the bf's hence I know so little about them!)

My old kinect connection wasn't USB.

On the right hand side, above the ethernet cable (the square with a little notch at the bottom), there is a USB connection that can be used.

Also you need an adapter to supply power, a bit like the chargers you get for iphones/ipods/tablets etc. where the USB cable plugs into a 3 pin plug. More info on microsoft's website or:

  • Original Xbox 360 console

  • Plug one end of the cable into the USB port on the back of the console and the other end into an electrical outlet.
  • If you have a wireless networking adapter, plug it into the USB port on the front of the console by using the supplied USB extension cable.
  • Move all other USB accessories to USB ports on the front of the console.

Note
If you bought a Kinect sensor with an Xbox 360 E console or with an Xbox 360 S console, you'll need to purchase a power/USB cable if you want to connect the sensor to an Original Xbox 360 console.

Ok, that sounds reasonable, so it should be fine if I buy one and buy the connection lead which should have a USB and also a normal 3pin plug on it?

You need to make sure you buy the "standalone" one - that as above came with a separate power brick.

Mine that came bundled with xbox slim and uses a custom connector.

Oh, and dont hold your breath for it to be any good.. even my flat wasnt big enough for it to be any practical use.. house even less so.

I've found a few on eBay that come with the power suppy. If I don't like it I can always sell it again lol. That's why I didn't buy one when they were stupidly expensive. I think £20-£30 is fine to try it out!

As said early white xbox's don't have enough power through the USB socket to run it stand alone so need a second power connection.

The later slim black consoles have a USB with extra power output and are highlighted in orange on the back of the console.

They are good fun but as neo says you need a LOT of space and need friends round for it to come into its own.

The bowling and tennis in Sports are incredibly similar to those on the Wii but you won't have a controller in your hand.

Dance Central is brilliant if you have a sense of rythmn (which after playing I realised I do not)

A lot of other games are bit of a novelty - kinect adventures is over in about 4 minutes.

Raving rabbids is a collection of some cool mini games. Playing whack a mole where you have to stamp on rabbids coming up through the floor of your own front room for example.

I'd get the sensor, get the 2 sports games (or the sport twin pack which also comes with all the downloadable add ones) and see how you get on. There are then loads of kinect demos to download which'll give you a good insight before a full on purchase

Cheers for the info :) I figured it would be a bit of a novelty, hence waiting so long before bothering to try it out. I did the same with the wii, thought I have found a few games on there which I enjoy.

I've found one on eBay which seems a good package and includes the power supply and a few games so hoping to win that one, if no there are others!

Col, I think the bundled one must be the one I was meaning that can only be used on newer consoles. There's not really much info about them being different which is a bit misleading! I take it that one can't be used on the old one even with the power supply?

i have the adapter that the kinect needs for the older model 360's, i have no need of it anymore so if you need one you can have it.

Thank you, that's very kind :) there's an auction ending tonight, so if I dot get this one I may need an adapter as I might end up with one that doesn't have one!
