Fuel Flap

Featured Replies

Hi,

Has anybody had an issue with the Fuel Flap not opening.

Mine on a 2009 Elegance is now sticking and wont release to open, which is a wee problem when you are starting to run out of fuel. I have managed to get it open buy knocking on the flap and pushing on / off for a while. Also by switching the central locking off and on until it opens.

I have now greased the "lock" but it is happening again

is it a new lock and is there another way of opening the fuel flap if it gets stuck again. I have checked from the boot, cant see anything

Thanks in advance

Hi,

I have taken the lock off the car, I can't see any way it can be released 'emergency' style.

The lock may be a generic VAG item, it's certainly outwardly identical to many Golfs, Passats etc. It doesn't look easily repairable as the two halves of it's plastic case are held together by many fiddly clips. These would all need releasing almost simultaneously, a problem given it's so small.

The lock is connected into the loom inside the boot, so to remove it would need the boot trim pulling back to remove it's power socket. There is no access to lock from inside the boot though, as it is effectively 'outside' the car - when the rubber fuel filler trim is removed, you are then looking at the back of the plastic wheel arch liner (and the lock and filler pipe).

There is no drain hole on the casing, so I would imagine it could slowly fill with watery crud over time via the seal of the protruding lock pin.

It would be tempting to fill the b*gger with oil, but the operating motor is probably a brushed DC type that would be damaged by any stray oil, and WD40 may affect the brushes in the longer term, despite it's claims. Might be worth it as a last resort, though.

I don't think it is in any way an electrical problem, the release mechanism just gets sticky.

Another poster (there have been several) mentioned £120 for the part.

The part number is in the photo.

Maybe others will come along soon with more idea.

If anyone has an old one it would be useful to take it apart to see exactly where (via a carefully drilled hole) you could get some lube in!

HTH.
