Car Starting Problem

Featured Replies

Just looking for some advice on the reason why my car isnt starting.

Keep going to my car in the morning and my battery has been dead.

Had the battery tested by a proper battery tester and its showing that its a good battery. Is it possible that because the battery had been charging for a while before that it has given me a false reading?

I have got a sub fitted but I have now had it disconnected for nearly a week and it is still dying.

It had a loose connection on the battery but I reconnected it and now that is sorted but it is still dying?

Any idea what it could be?

Hello JProc,

I had something similar yonks ago with a Rover Maestro 2.0 DI diesel, happened to go out to the car after dark to fetch something, once interior light gone back off, noticed dim red glow from the charge-warning light, battery hadn't yet died, garage diagnosed failing diode in alternator, was allowing a slight current leak.  Replacement alternator required. Worth a look after dark? Keep us posted!

Richard

The failing diode is unusual. Other possibilities could include an under-tensioned aux drive belt or a slippy alternator clutch.

It does sound like a duff battery that won't hold charge overnight, have you tried jumping it and does it start ok?

do you have the red battery light on with the ign? if not could be the broken wire for the alt, have you checked that it's charging ok etc.

boot switches play up and leave the light on and sometimes if the stereo is wired incorrectly it will keep the convience from sleeping

Had a look after dark and cannot see a dim glow from the light, cheers anyway

If I run the car for a while switch it off and then start it up again in a few ideas it starts okay so I presume its not the alternator?

Also it sometimes starts in the morning and it seems to be dependent on the weather, as when its colder it definately doesnt start. This is whats making me think its the battery as I know battery's do perish in the cold weather and loose charge faster?

When I jump it with either jump leads or a jump pack it starts straight away and runs no problem.

The red battery light does come on so I presume it isnt the alternator and my stereo does always switch off and I dont think its this because I have had the stereo in since I bought the car a year ago and its only started playing up recently.

Will check the boot light and keep you all posted! Thanks for the help guys!

Felicia16V,

Think you have helped me solve the problem mate, got home tonight and thought I would Just check my boot light.

After climbing into the back of my car folding the seats down and locking the car I found out that the light was still on! So I have removed the bulb and hopefully this will sort it! Cheers guys!

my car failed to start yesterday when i needed it for an interview typical, so 2 weeks ago i changed my alternator as the bearing had worn and was breaking up, literally, took battery off nightmare to remove and charged for a couple of hours and it fired up straight away, so not taking any chances bought a new battery for £50 odd, think i will still check my boot just incase light still on.
