New Octy Owner (to be)

Featured Replies

My personal experience was that none of my local dealers would give me any discount at all on the 0% deal.

So I went through "carwow" and went with the cheapest quote which was just over 6% discount (approx £1500 iirc) plus the 0% deal. Only snag was the dealer was 180miles away.

Even after I had that firm quote my local dealer wouldn't try to get close to it. So in the end I went through the broker!

I had the same experience at several dealers. Was looking for a VRS diesel estate and was asked the very sensible question "why would I need to discount them when I can't get them quick enough at list price?"

In the end, I emailed dealers for some quotes and did manage a small discount of about 5% (which I think was an error as other quotes provided by them were at list price). As octy says, that was on a vehicle on order which may be discounted slightly more highly.  I'd be surprised if your dealer doesn't help you out but likewise, i'd be amazed if they were to offer near broker prices. As suggested in my opening,  why would they?

I'd try for some extras added as a gesture of goodwill if you decide not to walk away.  Good luck with whatever you.  It'd be great to be kept informed.

I wont be going through a broker, as I know there are cars sitting waiting at Emden.

We shall see what happens, but I have a few dealers to try if no luck.

vrs1986,Your in Fife? How close is your local dealer to Edinburgh? I have a friend who lives near Edinburgh, and he always heads up towards Dundee area to buy cars. He says the Edinburgh dealers are rip off merchants

My local dealer is in Dunfermline. Edinburgh or Stirling wouldn't offer me any discount either. I never actually tried the Dundee dealer though! I had given up after the first few lol

Try Dundee area next time. Just a hint from a wise old Scotsman that I know (wise being the operative word). I think he mentioned a while back, that dealers in Dundee often take 2nd hand cars down to their Edinburgh branches, as they know they can get more for them there.

His daughter used to (dont know if she still does) live in Dunfermline.

That's a little disappointing to hear about the Edinburgh and Dunfermline dealers not doing discount.  I can't go all the way to Dundee though.  I'll just have to suck it up I think.  Might see if they'll move on the Citigo price.  I'll be ordering one at the same time as my vRS TSI.

Oh, hi.  I'm new.

A Citigo? I look at cars like that and just turn my nose up. Then again, I cant bare to drive anything like that. Too small and bare.

Yip.  It'll be just fine as a second car for school runs etc etc.

Do we have any idea on the Hill Hold Control?

Anybody here have a manual Octy Mk III that has hill hold? It should do according to the brochure (however much that can be relied upon), but ive just never associated it with a manual before.

Had hill hold on a manual Fabia loan car recently. Worked like a dream. You keep your foot on the brake while you're waiting, then when you take your foot off to hit the accelerator when it's time to go it maintains the pressure for a few seconds stopping you from rolling back. It disengages as you apply the power. Fantastic invention!

Ha. According to the website, its just 1 Auto model that gets HHC on a Fabia!

Good to see it works easily though.

I have Hill Hold Control on my manual Mk2 Scout, still can't get used to it as you have to use the clutch and accelerator together aggressively or it doesn't release quick enough.

I ordered mine yesterday, a 5% discount was achieved after a lot of faffing about playing two dealerships off against each other.

No response to my email today.

Nothing to add to the finance/deal conversation here but wanted just to answer a question in the first post.

Yes the Elegance manual does have hill start as standard. It doesn't show if activated but on any incline when you take your foot off the brake it's active and doesn't budge. Works well in my experience.

vrs1986,

I always found the Skoda dealer in Uphall to be excellent - they always worked hard to keep me happy - http://www.westendskoda.com .

To be honest i cancelled my 1st order with Simpsons of Colne they were very good as they couldn't get near the 6% discount i found and gave me my full deposit back and wished me luck.

Not a position i wanted to be in but sorry 6% is better in my pocket than theirs, they pretty much came up with the same story about buying at list with the 0% deal.

So i bought from DM Keiths in Huddersfield and nearly emptied the options list..

And not bad service i get a call every fortnight from them telling me the car is still accepted by the factory but no build date :)

I emailed the dealers informing them I had found it a lot cheaper elsewhere. So much so I would still be quids in by forfeiting the deposit. Then mentioning I found it dishonest what I had been told (although admittedly good selling technique by them as i fell for it). Never said i wanted to cancel the order though. Just informing them, and telling them I was annoyed at having been told what i had, when this is obviously untrue.

Yesterday got an email back from the manager, and he started by asking me if my order for the Octy was genuine!!! He couldnt understand why i went looking for other quotes after ordering the Octy. I can sort of see his point, but it took me aback all the same.

Still dont know where this one is going. Still annoyed, even if it was my fault for believing what they said.

That's mine ordered for an April (but probably May) delivery.

Winter pack (we're trying our luck)

The dealer has 14% margin in the car to start off with I think. This is not 14% of the OTR price, so all these people calculating their discounts from the OTR price are getting it wrong.

The 14% margin is in the list price of the car and options ex VAT; before VAT, Delivery Charge and VED are added.

So, to work out what discount level you should be going for, take the ex VAT price, deduct 6%, add VAT, add delivery charge and then add VED. This is not the same as deducting 6% from the OTR price.

If you are trading in, your car will be valued at a trade price, i.e. what it is worth at the auctions to the trade. If you are getting any more than trade for it, then the difference has come out of the 14% margin that the dealer has.

So, with a trade in you normally pay full list and get more than trade for yours, or get a discount and get trade for your swapper.

The 0% finance costs the dealer 6% of that margin to start off with, so there is only 8% left to play with, and most dealers will want to retain 2.5-3% of that. They are a business after all!

Aim for 6% discount and 0% finance, and you have as good a deal as you are going to get really.

Do your sums first - on an Elegance 2.0TDi Hatch with a list of £21,990 the ex VAT price is £17,854.17.

6% of this is £1,071.25, add VAT to this you get £1,285.50, so expect a good deal to be £20,704.50 on the 0% with 3 years servicing.

On the face of it, that looks like a discount of 5.85% from the OTR, but the delivery charge and VED are out of the dealers hands.

Err - he does have £500 of yours, so why does he think it is not genuine??????

If you had left no deposit I could see his point. The problem is you have entered in to a contract. If they have called the car off you have no way back really without losing some if not all of your deposit.

Did you get the same p/ex price at the other dealer?? They are experts at manipulating numbers, the only thing that matters is the 'price to change' i.e the amount you are financing in this case. If you have got a better price to change elsewhere go back and tell them to sharpen their pencil! You can always say that the other dealer gave you a proce and then called you back with a better offer to secure your business after you had done the deal, so you want them to match it.

Andyvee,

I know to base it on the price ex VAT etc. Of course, once you have that small discount, the VAT should be slightly less as well. Thanks for the insight on the margins etc. Very interesting.

My PartEx price at other dealer was again slightly better (in my favour). Obviously yes, I would always check the price to change price. First dealer definitely undervalued my car, but let them off to be fair to them (god knows why), as they are not popular cars.

I was a bit taken aback when he asked if the order was genuine. Like you, I did mention to him about the deposit he has.

Yes a contract has been signed, but i was just pointing out to them that what they told me was not correct, and better could be found.

Furbytom, that is pretty much exactly what I told him.

Lets see what i get back.

Well nothing moved regarding money. Manager never even replied to that second email i sent in. Whether he is away or not i dont know.

Anyway, car is in process of being shipped (or may already be in this country by now), and I will be picking up on Xmas Eve.
