Temp gauge mystery

Featured Replies

Right where do I start, had to replace alternator, battery fuse box and the 110amp fuse this week.before I had to replace alternator and the other bits the temp gauge used to go up to 90 and stay there when the blowers where put on,NOW temp gauge goes upto 90 and as soon as you put the blowers on the temp gauge drops to just below 80,but turn the blowers off and it goes back upto 90.hoping some one can help me with this. Thanks in advance

If its dropping on the move sounds like the thermostat.  The gauge should get to 90 and stick there.

Temp sensor is easy but the thermostat is fiddly.

Mine does the same when you put the blowers on and I've scanned with vagcom and get no codes. I've had the temp sender done so its probably the thermostat. But the cars running well and pasted it MOT with flying colours so just left as is.

Id change it as itll be costing you in extra fuel.

Was the temp sensor you fitted genuine VAG?

When it comes to the CTS (coolant temp sensor) you cannot rely on a lack of fault codes. It will only cause the ECU to throw a code if it shorts to ground or becomes intermittent. As long as the ECU is getting a signal it won't throw a code, You need to look in VCDS/Vagcom engine measuring blocks to see what temp the ECU is getting from the CTS for correct diagnosis.

Get ready for fun, fun, fun changing that thermostat!!! If you want any top tips, let me know as I did mine last night.

I think so. It was a couple years ago now so I'm not a 100%.But what do remember is the old one was black and new one was green.

Id get it changed (stat)

Why I don't see the point. It stopped the problem I was having which was no temp showing at all and it wasn't of ebay. Also I'm averaging 30-35 mpg.So not drinking fuel.Could it cause any damage ?

Youll be using more fuel and the engine wont get fully upto temperature as a result.  Its a no brainer.

My temp gauge has been like this since I got her back 12 months ago. Changed the temp sender, but it's still doing the same.

Car is good, no problems, good mpg. I will get it done at some point as I bought a new thermostat and seals 12 months ago. :)

Was it a genuine VAG sensor?

Swap it asap as you are losing economy here!
