Safety Camera Warnings on the MK3 Satnav

Featured Replies

Though I have traded my Octy for a new Golf (the MK3 is just too big for me) I will remain a Freedom member as the people on this forum seem much more informed, capable and helpful than any of the VW forums I have found, and essentially a lot of MK3 info will still be relevant to me.

So here is my query.  Has anyone been able to find a way of loading a Safety Camera Database onto the new MK3 Satnav, preferably with audio warnings.

The consensus on the VW forums is that it not possible, except on the Pro Navigation system and even then without audio warnings.  As I respect the technical nous of Briskodians if anyone can find away it will be this forums members.

You can but it's very difficult & not worth the time & hassle.

I used to have a built in Sat Nav in my last car and it was awful (that's bye the bye), but I just used to have either my phones sat nav on instead because it was so much better than the built in one, but I could also merge the GPSW database into it without any fuss.

You can load them, but I don't think there are any audio warnings you can enable. There is a VW webpage somewhere where you can import the POIs and convert them.

From what I remember of it, it was a case of getting the mapping data from the DVD and then inserting the speed camera data in a format that the unit understands, then reauthoring the DVD and reinstalling the maps.

It's quite convoluted and unless you know precisely what you're doing you can screw your system up.

That was years ago, the later firmwares on the RNS510 you could import your own custom poi database.

It appears to be the same on the new MIB Columbus, but haven't tried it yet.

I just downloaded Road Pilot Mobile to my smartphone, cost me £3.99 for a lifetime subscription plus £25 for a Broadit phone mount, sorted!

It translates roughly..

Here you can create your own POI lists collections for the Discover Pro.

Discover the various ways of navigating with your own POI lists (POI = Point of Interest).
Please use the information provided under "1,2,3", to learn about the process of creation. This information is also available in the course at any time using the link "How it works" reach.

Makes perfect sense  :giggle:

A lightly better translation:

Here you can collate (create) your own POI-list-collections for the Discover Pro.

Discover the wide range of possibilities of navigating with your own POI lists.

Please use the information listed under "1,2,3" to learn about the process of creating these lists. You can access this information at any time by using the link "So funktioniert's".

I know it can be done on the Discover Pro ( the Columbus I believe on the Octavia), though with no audio warnings just visual.  But no one seems to have been able to do on the standard Discover Navigation (The Amundsen I believe)) unit which is what I am interested in.

I don't have a smart phone but am considering getting one just for a Camera DB - any one recommend a good cheapish GPS enabled Smart Phone running Android so I can load a Camera App on it.

Depends on how much you want to spend, a Samsung Galaxy S3 can be had for around £180 (used) or £260 (new) both sim free, but at those prices you'd be better off buying a proper Sat Nav, such as a TomTom or Garmin.

Tha'ts the conundrum why do we buy cars with inbuilt Satnavs and then find they have some serious limitations and have to buy other tech to get the features we want.  As a SatNav the Discover/Amundsen is good but in this country we really do need a unit which gives us audible warnings of Camera sites - which is perfectly legal in the UK
