Retro-fitting front fog lights

Featured Replies

Anyway, what we really need is for stevebedford to tell us if he removed the bumper grilles to see if the harnesses are there.

Come on Steve, put us out of our misery, are they there or not?

I'm just glad mine came with fog lights as standard and DRLs.

You're looking at this on too small a scale. Of skoda can a few cents here and there, say 5, 10 or 20 components per car, then multiply by nearly a million, multiplied by 4 or 5 years, then multiply by all the parts of the VAG group...

I have worked clients who are saving 1-2 pence per unit but when you are shifting millions it adds up. Once a company finds the easy wins on cost saving then it is down to the little things.

In terms of the number of customers who are interested in retro fitting things (which is probably a very small proportion) then there is no net benefit to the manufacturer.

Remember all manufacturers are interested in the fleet market and mass market not niche buyers.

Of course you are right and I am speaking (ehm, writing) from my point of view. Unfortunatelly we are considered, as you perfectly wrote, as niche buyers even if the sum of niche buyers sums up the mass market. But eventualy this is how mass market works.

After twelve years of Skoda ownership, I will be surprised if the harness is there. I almost can bet that it won't be there.

Would i not be able to feel it if i put my hand up the back? Or if i parked on a curb i might be able to get my head under to have a look?

The undertray will probably get in the way, assuming it is similar to the Octavia.

Oh yeah. Silly me. I forgot about that minor prob. Cheers! :).

sometimes, things have ALMOST the same wiring, but the extra wiring needed may have been "Terminated" further along the wiring loom, say, not just at the point of connection, but nearer the switch or anywhere en-route to said fogs. There could be an additional wiring plug/socket, needing an extra length of loom to be routed from that point to the lamps. This is probably what they have done, so as to make it easy to wire during build but tricky as an afterthought. I would guess anything that is a common requested upgrade may have an easier solution, say, alarm, etc, but rarer, unlikely additions would follow the money saving approach. (Thats how I would do it, anyway)!

I recently retro fitted auto lights to my Octavia. The loom from the switch to the central electrics widget had 9 out of 10 wires in the loom, the missing wire was the necessary one for auto lights to work. Fortunately it was just the case of using a repair wire which plugged straight into the connectors at either end.

Hi all,

After reading through the thread and not breally being any the wiser, I have pinged Skoda Customer Services an email requesting confirmation the front fog lights can be retrofitted and for them to supply the relevant part numbers etc. If they are on the ball we should be able to confirm if a connection loom/switch is required.

It will be interesting to see what reply (if any) I receive back.

If the loom is there, what would you expect to find when you take thr headlight switch out? A wire already there ready for the new one? Or wha?

Im not familiar with the things car manufacturers do.

Hi all,

I have had a response (very impressed with the speed of response) from Skoda Customer Services. They checked my chassis number against their build records and confirmed it is not possibel to retro fit the front fog lights. They did not go in to detail as to why not, but as they had checked the build records, I assume the foglight option has different loom/parts etc.

Steve

Maybe not possible to buy Parts from Skoda,  fit as 'plug and play'. and simple as that.

Somehow Skoda never think things are Possible unless it shows on a list some place.

But very possible to go to an 'Auto Electrician', and say, 'i would like to fit Front Fog lights to my car'.

'Can you fit it with Skoda Parts, or what do you need to get and any idea how much it will cost me for you to install them.?'

Oh come on now!!! Nowadays it is possible to grow hair on a bald head. Sometimes Skoda acts like living on the dark side of the moon.

Just a glimpse at the projects around here will let them know that it is possible to retrofit fog lights.

It has to be possible somehow. Its just at what level of disruption and difficulty it may involve.

If its just fit em in n plug em into an already available plug, then change the switch, perhaps put a fuse in. Id jump at it and fit them myself tomorrow.

But if its a new loom etc, its not worth the hassle and disruption for me.

Exactly - which was my hope!

But it is still very much possible - just fit new or 2nd hand light cluster and run your own loom to an after market switch (c/w indicator light) and to a power source - obviously include a fuse).

The trick is to make it look neat.

Exactly. Did that with fogs and driving lights on my mk2 escort and mark 3 cortina in the early 80s. Seen OEM fogs on flea bay for £50ish a few weeks ago. Wire them into the blank for heated seats?

Did anyone manage to retrofit front fog lights in the end?

Too much hassle to wire them in, is the general outcome i think.

Mine had working front fog lights when I purchased it :p. Swapped over to DRLs was a piece of cake as I already had the plug behind the fogs. If anyone wants to buy a pair of front fogs for the mk2 VRS then I have a pair for sale.

Didnt think the VRS had fogs?

So did everyone else but somehow mine did. I have 2 plugs behind my DRL's, one for the fog and one for the DRLs. Speaking on another topic a few weeks back when I get a nice day I'll take a few pics and see what goes where, might help you lot find a way.
