which one to buy

Featured Replies

hi, i'm looking to buy a superb and my budget is £5000.  i've seen two that i'm interested in.  the first one is a Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI PD (140) Elegance 2008 (57reg) 99,900 miles, 1 Former keeper, priced at £4000.  the second one is a Skoda Superb 1.9 TDI PD (105) SE 5dr face lift model 2010 (59reg) 170,000 miles One Former keeper, Full Service History, Two Keys, priced at £5300. should i go for the newer model with high mileage or the older one.  which one would be more reliable.

your thoughts please

Cant saymuchaboutnewer model, but by all accounts if your looking for reliability, stay clear of the 2.0

Hi,

You should be able to find a good MKI 1.9 TDI for that budget. As above don't go near the 2.0PD.

Best of luck,

Rob

The 1.9 with the 130 HP engine is better than the 105 and uses no more fuel if you drive considerately. For me, at the time of buying, the cost of insurance was exactly the same. Get a car with folding rear seats.

The best engine is the AWX - printed on a paper label on the cambelt cover and on the build sticker in the boot/service book.

The newer one has high miles but is in a different league to the mk1. As above do not buy the 2.0tdi in the mk1. It will break and you will regret buying it. Look for a 1.9 TDI 130bhp elegance mk1

£5300 for a 170,000 mile car.... no way.

People whinge and moan about the 2.0 TDI, perhaps some have had issues but my previous 2.0 TDi 140 with 88,000 miles on it worked flawlessly.

As already advised, the 1.9 TDI 130 is a cracking engine and more reliable than the 2.0

Also need to add....

Just seen from your signature that you're in the North East.  Are you only looking in the local area or nationwide?

I ask this because we are in a bubble up here, cars are >£1000 higher than other areas of the country, if you're using Autotrader (I don't work for them, it's not an advert for them, just an example) do a 100-200 mile search and you will see the same car age, mileage, trim level as up here but much cheaper in other parts of the country.  You'll save enough for a 3rd party warrantry, trip down the country and still have ~£500 in your back pocket.

Thanks for the replies.  I’m gonna give the 2.0L a miss.

@sheldon, I’ve been doing a nationwide search as there’s not too many up this way.  I’m going to look at a Skoda Superb 1.9 TDI PD 130 Elegance 4dr Tip Auto (55reg) 79000miles tomorrow.  He’s a dealer and he’s asking £4695 for it.  It’s 150miles from where I live.  He said it has come straight from a skoda dealer and they done the last service which cost around £750 and was under a 1000miles ago.  This is from the advert

NUMBER OF FORMER KEEPERS 1 ALONG WITH A FULL UP TO DATE SERVICE HISTORY INCLUDING "CAMBELT" + RECON TURBO WITH 12 MONTHS WARRANTY !!! FOR SALE WITH 2 KEYS + FULL H.P.I CLEAR CERTIFICATE.

I’ve just done a mileage check on direct.gov site and all seems ok

edit:  just been in touch and was told there's only a 30day mechanical warranty with the car as well as a 12month one for the turbo.

does this seem a good price/deal on this car

Don't buy an auto. The 30 day warranty says it all. There is also a big hit in performance and economy.

The 5 speed manual transmission (GGB) is the most reliable option by far.

ok thanks rotodiesel.  back to searching the web for me then lol

30 day warranty is a legal minimum.

I know the feeling about searching for cars in the Newcastle area.... Not many around with good spec, good condition, low mileage (holy grail moment).

I've been as far as Birmingham before but was very lucky with my last car (Mondeo ST TDCI), found one 15 miles from home (only comparable ones had been 100 miles+).

Good luck with your search.

Forget what Sheldon wrote about the 2.0 TDI. Stay away from it, Google never lies. I know about 5 lads who had that engine and they all ended up with a useless car eventually.

I love driving my auto but I got it at 39,000 with a 1 year main dealer warranty (so wasn't too risky at that point), and now 2 years into owning the car at 98K it has bitten me with a £1500 bill.

I don't think I'd get one at 79K on the clock with such little comeback.

I'm not sure what stock to put in the full Skoda history - the routine maintenance on this car is easy, and if it has a main dealer history you'll probably never find a car that has the auto gearbox looked after properly - as they don't recommend the fluid change that the gearboxes own manufacturer specify...!  :wall:

i rang him but he couldn't understand a word i was saying so i text him 2hrs ago asking if it was still for sale but have not had a reply yet.  seems like one of those "if it's too good to be true it probably is" situations lol

update for the above post:  he's been in touch and it's still for sale.  it's the 1.9tdi (105) estate S model with 89000k. are these the same engine that was in the mk1 as I'm just wondering if I could remap it to get more power out of it if I bought it,  or should I wait and try and locate a mk1 elegance with all the bells and whistles on.  it's also 285 mile from my home

what do you think I should do

back to the drawing board as I have just found out that the estate advertised above has 180,000k and not 89,000k as advertised

Be carful about the water ingress. I went to see 8 of them during the course of 2012 and 1 this year. Only found 2 that didn't have dampness under the carpet!

Sorry but I've looked all over and I couldn't seem to find the right deal on a superb and as I need a car right for work I've went and bought a 2009 Passat 2.0tdi estate 110 bluemotion2.  I'll keep this for a while but my next motor will defo be a superb,  estate preferably as there'll be a lot more around by then for the kind of money I want to spend.

regards to all,
