Locking wheel nuts - Beware

Featured Replies

Bobdog-where are you!!!

had exact problem with skoda locking wheel bolts, best to ditch them and get some Mcgard ones instead, as they offer excellent customer service should you ever loose your locking key or need a replacement.

Be careful if you decide to apply grease to the threads. Some lubricants can cause irritation to unprotected skin when handling the nut threads. Wear gloves if you decide to do this and wash all affected areas thoroughly after if over spill occurs.

I'd be more worried about them coming loose myself.

Agreed, absolutely. The last thing you need is a nut making a bolt for it.

Tighten to the correct torque and re check the torque from time to time. Same as you would for checking tyre pressures.

I was told by my mate in the trade that all Skodas coming to the UK had locking bolts fitted here when they arrived & the four ordinary bolts were dropped in with the jack etc. where carried. Not sure if that's true, my 2012 MY didn't have the spares, but I ditched the locking nuts very early on & he got four standard studs for me, cost about £10 from a factor, but genuine Veedub group parts. Like many others, I now swap tyres by the season, but every couple of weeks, slack back & re-torque all studs. I've got the usual 17 inch alloys with Pirelli "summer" boots. but a full set of 16 inch steel rims (Superb items, from Bickerton) fitted with Nokian winter rubber. After checking with Bickerton & the supplier of my car, use the same torque for both sets. Never had any problems with studs coming loose, or seizing up. Always use a smear of Copaslip on studs & wheel.hub mating surfaces, again never any problems.

I have never had a problem with locking wheel nuts but because of this thread I removed  and refitted my lockers this morning and copper greased them.......just in case!
