bad mpg!

Featured Replies

My question is what model/spec/engine size you have a rough mpg?

My fabia 1.4 mpi is shocking for a tiny car, 23mpg. Once gained 31.6.

Any tips on this?

I thinking of getting a octavia 1.8t. As I need more of a car with having two kids double buggy and need to fit a load of car parts in regularly. Be a better choice for next car? :)

if your wanting to do alot of long distance runs you cant beat a diesel for economy .... and i cant see a 1.8t being any better than your fabia for economy

Need more space though, diesel would only be worth it if I was doing a lot of motorway miles, which im not. May aswell go back to having a scooby was getting 25mpg out of that thing and was a lot bigger.

When SWMBO had an Octy vRS 1.8t, even beRing in mind it was only a 5sp, she averaged about 37 around town and into the 40's in the urban blast.

I'd suggest that there is something badly wrong wih an/a 1.4 petrol to get that mpg. Faulty MAF?

I've got a Octavia 1.8t. I get 30mpg round town short trips and 40mpg on a run driving normally in both cases. Isnt a MPI a bit dated? Possibly not the most economical engine around.

Averaged 70mpg today, but that was a 100 mile trip at 65mph.

PD130 diesel engine.

I could get 36+ in my modded mk1 Octavia vRS 1.8T round town and 40+ on runs and to and from work.

Just got to use the brakes less and keep the car moving.

gentle acceleration and anticipate lights.  Leave it in gear down hills and over run up to lights using the engine to slow you down

your 1.4 is not the best engine and Id say is underpowered for the car, just because its a small engine doesn't mean its good on fuel.

It should be returning higher figures than that though definitely.

Without knowing what kinda trips your doing I think it's impossible to say if you're returning good or poor mpg. If you're only going 5 min up the road, sat in traffic or something then 23mpg wouldnt be that awful

I thought the 1.4MPI was known for being thirsty and that the engine was dumped due to it not meeting emissions requirements?

MY PD100 gets around 45MPG around town, but I tend not to drive during rush hour. Best I ever had was 93.6MPG (calculated by fuelly) doing 55-60MPH between Sheffield and Glastonbury with no traffic. Worst was 36.6MPG calculated when I had an issue with the rear brakes binding.

Owned this car for just under 3 months and finally getting round to its problems, wasnt looked after by he last owner. Power steerig pump somehow is smashed and casing broken fron underneath and not had a service in 3 years! Ive been told not the best engine ideally anyway but mine seems super lower than everyone else ive asked gets. daily i'll drive 25-35min trip up to 4 times, not in rush hours.

Hi.

I've had my Fabia 1.2 Classic since May 2013. I get approximately 39 mpg urban and 47 mpg on the motorway.

Seems like the 1.4 needs a service.

Average MPG 45.24     Total Miles 3035     Total Litres 341.93

1.4 16v elegance fabia mk1 i get about 120-160 miles to £20, which is about 14.5 litres

Just for info I've got a 1.4 mpi, 130k on it and driving like my nan I get 41mpg cruising at 50 mph. It's well serviced and looked after. That 41mpg is according to the trip computer so I'm sure it's less than that if I calculated it properly.

Never drive it round town really but it will easily drop to low thirties. It's an ancient pushrod engine, never going to be great. Plus the car is a heavy lump.

At least 650 to a tank - that's around 66mpg. The computer says 71mpg average but it's lying.

It's a 1.4TDI estate, mostly on smaller A and B roads.

This is how I feel. Filling up my fabia too often and not getting much from it :(

Could be a sensor or the thermostat. Is the temp gauge moving at all?

I sympathise, all the loathsome diesel smuggery can a bit much to take, especially when you're looking for help.

With the 1.4 MPi you have the least economical engine fitted as standard to any Fabia, around town and on short trips it's particularly bad, from memory you've also been having problems with your PAS which won't help. As suggested you may need to replace the temperature sensor and possibly the thermostat if the car isn't warming up quickly or fully.

Hey GeorgeanneMidnight did ask what engines we have! Not our fault we get excellent return figures   haha

Is there any chance your brakes are binding i noticed a dip in economy and that was the cause.

I had brake binding issues too! but you'd notice it at low speeds if you come off the throttle - you'll feel a tug slightly at one corner on every revolution of the wheel

I think the diesel is ok around town infact I think it's a good engine for both motorway and mixed. If you drive it correctly you still have the MPG of a little 1.4 / 1.3 petrol but the performance when you need it.

Right guys, my fabia has now had a new maf, new loom between battey and alternator as was showing low voltage but brand new battey fault not coming up now :) car seems to be running smoother now, still to check on mpg if changes but not really been anywhere to compare to before yet .

Need more space though, diesel would only be worth it if I was doing a lot of motorway miles, which im not. May aswell go back to having a scooby was getting 25mpg out of that thing and was a lot bigger.

My Fabia 1.9TDi hatch does very well around town compared to my previous car (1.4 8v petrol). I know it's a bit small for you but the estates look awesome when done right.

Around town I do around 100 miles a week around Manchester and Salford and I'm getting an average of 43.53mpg according to my fuel calculator app (Road Trip LE on iOS) On a run, say from Manchester to Essex where my family live I can get 60+mpg.

I use Shell V-Power Nitro at all times which isn't cheap tbh @ £1.47 per litre. Costs me 14.7p per mile around town. And is worth every penny if it does what they say it does.

Hope this helps.
