DSG Reliability

Featured Replies

Picking up my 2009 Octy vRS on Saturday and can't wait. It's my first car with a DSG gearbox. After googling a bit it seems some people have had some issues with it, with one Audi mechanic stating they are good for 60k and then can be problems. Now I am slightly concerend as the car has done 68k.

Forums can be a strange place and you only ever read about problems but just wondered if anyone can give me any real life feedback about the DSG and if they are reliable or not.

Cheers

I had a Seat Altea 2.0 TDI with DSG. Absolutely loved it and really miss it. I got rid of the car at about 70k and never had a problem with the box. The reason I got rid though was because of Turbo boost pressure problems which made the car go into limp mode all the time. I have now got a Golf Plus manual and vowed that my next car will have a DSG box in it.

Thanks for the reply. Re-assuring to know you would have another.

As long as oil is changed every 40k they tend to go on forever

A friend of mine has an 06 octavia with over 100k on clock with no issues

I think some of the early ones had issues but they've been out 10years now so I think we would have heard about more issues by now throughout the vag group if they were troublesome.

You won't regret it!! I was unsure at first but now I can't imagine life without a DSG

Most are very good and give no problems. If you get a bad one then you could be in for a heap of trouble. I hope you haven't bought my old car, I got rid at 30k miles as the DSG was hopeless, always stalling and playing up. Dealer couldn't fix it so I sold it before the warranty ran out. I'd never have another.

They seem to be reasonably reliable but if something does go wrong then it is more than likely going to be an expensive fault. There is someone on brisky that has done over 600,000 kms with his and it still works fine.

Some you win, some you lose. I've had four Octavia's now, all DSG and no problem with any of them.  Exhaust pressure sensor, now that's a different discussion....

That's me, it's up to 610,000kms now. Still rockin'post-22824-0-46150400-1386279793_thumb.jpg

The morning I hit the 600 mark I thought it was worthy of a photo!!

My Leon TDI DSG is now at 92K. No problems with the box itself. The selector lever has played up, and the DMF is about to be replaced as it is noisy. I'd have another, no problems. There's a lot of scare stories- but remember, there's hundreds of thousands of DSG boxes out there.

Not really sure where the Audi mechanic guy gets 60,000 miles from. The 6 speed wet clutch DSG as fitted to the diesels and vRS models is very reliable.

However the flywheels are not.....but I believe they changed the design of the flywheel from 2009 onwards so it shouldn't be a problem in your car. Mine is 7 1/2 years old and has done 80,000 miles with no problems whatsoever.

There was a rumour from taxi drivers that they failed at 60-70k regularly; I remember it and getting nervous at that mileage. Reckon it's *******s.

Take no notice of anything you read on forums ;)

I went half mad before I bought my 58 plate L&K Octavia estate reading about failures in this and that, and don't buy one of them or one with that engine in, and don't get the DSG gearbox, they're crap and always fail and cost 4k to fix when they go wrong!

There are hundreds of thousands in use around the world and very very few ever have any problems. Most people on these forums, of which that's a minute fraction of Skoda owners around the world, may have had a problem, or heard of someone who has but for every issue on here I bet there's 10000 vehicles on the road that haven't!

Mine is faultless, bought it with 62000 on the clock and it didn't appear to have had an oil change in it's life. Took it in, the engineer said the filter was perfect, had the oil changed and am confident it will give me many more miles of smooth driving.
