headlight lense cleaning anyone done it

Featured Replies

I need to clean the inside of 1 of my headlights has anyone done this? How easy/hard is it to do. Drivers side is nice and clear passenger side is a little discoloured.

Are you sure the top lacquer/coating on the headlamp has not peeled away?  My drivers side one is just starting at the top.

Just fitted hid kit ( I know I know) and the passenger side is nowhere near as bright as drivers side. Even before hid passenger side was duller.

I've cleaned and polished the headlights on my old hrv using micro mesh...outside not inside.

Swmbo has a lexus rx300 which has polycarbonate? Lenses that turn yellow/brown toward the top, tried the old toothpaste trick and they have come up like new. I used the smallest amount of pearl drops on a lightly damp microfiber to scrub the light then buffed off with a dry one.

Yes you can do it , be careful and do it slowly

toothpaste on headlights? Has to be the cheapest fix ever lol

My old honda's used to get horrid headlights theyd go dull after every summer.

So i fixed it! you'll need:

1200 wet/dry

1400 wet/dry

2400 wet/dry

Fairy liquid and some water and a microfiber cloth to rub off the polish.

Some polish to remove 2400 Grit scratched and a good 30mins to buff them out by hand! or you can use a machine polisher like i did and had it done in 10mins, they came out like glass, and i never had to redo ever again tin my ownership!

Remember to mask off everything in the nearby vicinity if your planning to use a machine polisher,

I go down the route of

Wash

Clay

1200 grit

1500 grit

2500 grit

Polish with compound (rotary machine)

Refine with Dual Action

Coat of wax.

Usually works well - unless the issue is on the inside of the lens (usually caused by poor bulb choice - sun only affects the outside in my experience)

Its the inside of the lens :( cant I just take the unit out and pour something inside it? Or is that wishfull thinking

Think you need a new one tbh.

I saw something like this so have it a go and it really works well.

DEFINITELY on the inside?  Have you actually verified this?

I would personally remove the light unit and the bulb fittings and have a poke around through one of the bulb holes.

Guys, he said it's INSIDE his lenses, not the outside. All the polishing suggestions relate to the outsides, lol!

To the OP - do a search on Google. It is possible to remove the entire headlamp unit from some of these cars, and put it in the oven on a low heat for a short time, in order to soften up the glue that holds the lense onto the unit itself.

You can then use a small, sharp knife to cut the sealant all the way round between the unit and the lense, and remove the lense.

You can then polish the inside of the lense.

Then use a proprietry mastic / sealant to re-attach the lense to the unit.

And Bob's your Uncle.

bung it in the oven, 200C (180 fan) Gas Mk5 for 30 minutes, serve with vegetables and gravy.

Thanks to all for responses. Ive cleaned the outside just to make sure and the passenger side is duller with lights on so it is defo on the inside. So it seems like ive got to strip the light unit down grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :( me no likey

Ive cleaned the outside just to make sure

How?  Just checking if you have just washed "cleaned" it or actually done a full sanding/polishing refurb and it's still the same. :)

This is the typical appearance of VAG sun bleached lens'

but they always (usually.....) come out well

Not done a full on refurb but gave it a good clean. Can see water marks on the inside of the lens so really im putting 2 and 2 together

Now after seeing your pics im unsure :( bugger it. Its defo git water marks inside..... but it wouldnt hurt to do the full sanding refurb so they are both crystal on the outside

condensation inside isn't too bad to sort, but lights will need splitting really.

If the outside feels a little "gritty" when you run a fingernail across them, this can also suggest outside sun bleaching.

Ok cheers for that. I shall do the outside first and see what they look like
