My Octy 2.0Tdi Elegance (16'' wheels) is fitted with Goodyear NCTs. I've noticed that later equivalent Octys are fitted with Bridgstone. Does anyone know reasons behind the change? :tipspecs:

I think generally it depends on who gives the better deal for a job lot of tyres.

Some cars are developed with specific tyres in mind but I doubt the new Octavia is such one.

I don't know. I would have thought that there'd be an engineering reason for the change rather than just a cost issue. Surely tyres are specified on the grounds of perdormance/handling etc and would have been fully validated before being approved for fit on road-going vheicles. i wonder if it was a road noise issue or something like that.

no, almost certainly a cost issue. Sometimes it's even down to the dealer who gets the best price as to what is fitted.

There's not many mainstream vehicles that have 1 or even 2 specific brands of tyre (porsche being one)

Price and supply would be the determining factor.

The homologation certificate will normally specify a number of different makes for each homologated wheel size. I'm just looking at the certificate for A Class and it says that tyres from Continental, Dunlop, Goodyear, Michelin or Pirelli are all allowed.

Depending on where you live, and how zealous your inspectors are, a car could be refused an MOT or its equivalent for having the wrong ones.

I can't recall an inspector ever having checked this on any of the cars or motorbikes that I've owned though.

My Octy 2 Tdi estate (17" wheels) came with Dunlops as did my wifes Fabia Tdi elegance on optional 15" alloys. We both think that the Dunlops are very noisy tyres with only average wet weather grip. This leads me to think that the choice of tyre at the factory is as much to do with cost as performance.

On the subject of Bridgestone tyres, previous Auto express tests have not rated them very highly at all.

My wife replaced her Dunlops on her Fabia with Vredestein Sportrac 2's at 14000 miles. The rear tyres were still like new!! and she says that the car has been transformed

I will persevere with the Octy cause the 17" tyres cost a serious amount more to replace!!

My octy 2 pegasus alloys came with bridgestone potenza fitted, some new octys I noticed the other day; as you do; now have michelin primacy pilots. I got the dealer to swap my wheels front to back at the first service (18K) as the fronts had worn down to 3 mm ; mostly motorway driving.

Someone has recommended avons to me.

Any thoughts on good sensibly priced 225/45r17 ?

Avons are rubbish, as are all but the most expensive Dunlops and goodyears. I've been very impressed with Yokohama AVS DBs. Very grippy but designed to be quiet.

Interesting to see what comes on mine in 17"... I run GSD3's on my current A4 and the Golf. Wouldn't go for anything else out of choice at the moment....

I finally got around to looking at the certificate for my Octy2 1.9 TDI; it doesn't bother to list the makes of tyres, only the wheel sizes and tyre dimensions.

For what it's worth (and since I was often looking myself) here they are:

6J*15 ET47: 195/65 R15 91H

6.5J*15 ET50: 195/65 R15 91H

6.5J*15 ET50: 205/60 R15 91H

6J*16 ET50: 205/55 R16 91H

6.5J*16 ET50: 205/55 R16 91H

7J*17 ET54: 225/45 R17 91W

My Octy 2.0Tdi Elegance (16'' wheels) is fitted with Dunlop SP Sport 01a, it is band new and after only 4 days I have a puncture !!! right on the edge of the tyre... Bad luck or what... Anyway, I ordered a new one over the internet a Dunlop SP SPort 01a (205/55/16R 91V) When it arrived it has a different thread pattern to my originals!! I double checked on the internet and Dunlop's web site and there is no trace of the original tread pattern on an SP SPort 01a !!! The new tyre is half ziz zag pattern and half straight grooves whereas the original tyres are ziz zag pattern across the whole tyre.

Both tyres are Dunlop SP SPort 01a (205/55/16R 91V).. anyone any ideal why? and will it be ok running mixed patterns on the same axle?

Mine delivered on 1 Sept 2004 is fitted with Bridgestones.

I suspect they buy in batches from more than one supplier.

Bridgstones on mine (27th oct. delivery)

Bridgestones on mine (delivered to dealer in September).

Definately more road noise than i would have expected but i've getting used to it now.

The bridgestones are the noisiest tyres i've ever used. My car is on Michelin Primacys now and it's absolutely transformed, so much quieter.

I couldn't agree more, I have Michelin Primacys on my Ambiente, delivered in August - very quiet. Of course my previous car was a Saxo so anything above a Tescos shopping trolley full of tins pulled across gravel seems like a quiet, smooth ride to me . :)

Is the roadholding as good as with the Bridgestones?

I figured that already as I couldn't imagine getting anymore road noise than I am. My car is a lease car and as I do just less than 10k a year, i'm going to get them to service it annually. At the service they change the tyres if they show any real signs of wear so i'll be asking for Michelin's next time and having a bit of fun with ESP off prior to that to make sure the tyres are ready for a change.

Mine are Bridgestone and sound okay - very quiet engine [when cruising!!]means not much else to listen to if audio is off. It's going to be a long time, barring trouble, before I get to sample a different type. But it would never have occurred to me that these were unduly noisy tyres.

Better, by a long way.

Can anyone tell me which Bridgestone Potenza tyres are fitted to the 17" Pegasus alloys? Are they the RE050 or the RE040? I have an Octavia Sport TDI on order and wondered what tyres are likely to be fitted.

I'd also like to know the answer to this question if anyone can oblige :-)

Not sure, but I drove a relatives car with the 17" and potenza and I didn't think they were that noisey.
