Digital camera question - on a budget

Featured Replies

The S5500 has 10x zoom (equivalent to 37-370mm on a 35mm) - should be enough for most uses! I really noticed the limitations of the 3x on my Canon A70 at Brunters by my SLR at 210 was fine.

Fuji S7000 now going for about

I will try it one day but the 12 mp option is in raw data not compressed so you dont get many pics on a card......have been told 6Mp is good enough for flawless A3 picture size so what do you do with a 12Mp picture?

Exactly the thoughts of a friend of mine who's a semi-pro photographer. He's got the S602.

That was the one I opted for too :D

I just ordered a reconditioned Fuji S5500 for

I`ve just got a Kodal 6490 which has 10X optical, 30X digital and 4MP for 199 that fits into your budget. And I must say not bad for the price. That was from comet

Well, it's been put in the post today so hopefully will have it ahead of the weekend. If I get a chance between work, I'll try it out and report back.

I checked the fuji site and they seem quite good value, except they only have 6 months warranty. I checked the price of the S5500, and then tried www.comparestoreprices.co.uk to see how much it is elsewhere,

I got an s5500 a few weeks back. Haven't had many opportunities to use it though :( . Got good reviews apart from the Electronic view finder. It's cr*p. Camera looks and feels excellent. BTW Cheeky,7dayshop.com are selling 256meg Fujifilm xd cards for only

I checked out pixmania and ebuyer first - pixmania seem to charge
I think you have convinced me to buy the s5500  , i will have to get myself some batteries and will check the reference to 7dayshop for a larger memory card. I am going to call into Jessops and quiz them. Apparently they do a pricematch. Pixmania are

Got mine from pixmania I think and they offer discounts on high-rating rechargeables and chargers too if your placing a camera order. At least they did when I placed my order. I also did a 3-day delivery and it came next day' date=' but I might just have been lucky :D

Interestingly, I just did a search on Jessop's web site and they don't list the S5000 - has it been superceded by another model?

I was searching for the S5500 not the S5000. Jessops have one priced at

Its all done, I have ordered a Kodak 6490 for

I have had the S5500 for a few months now, and am generally pleased with it.

However there are a few things I dont like:

1. I seem to get camera shake much more than my previous film slr.

2. The lens seems to be out of focus around the edge on some shots, I also sem to have to sharpen up most shots on the computer or they look out of focus.

3. Dont be fooled in to what the LCD display shows you, the images look great but when downloaded arnt as good, so learn to read the histogram feature it tells you more about the image you will get.

Having said all that for the price its hard to beat for value.

Before you buy see: http://www.dpreview.com/

Thanks Turbo

I checked out the dpreview site and reviewcentre before i made any hasty decisions. If i hadn't, SWMBO would never let me forget it. Not a good way to start a marriage :P

But i thought you liked it???

I do but some times my pictures come out of focus when I dont expect them to be.

I think I maye be expecting too much out of the camera some times. I shall carry on using it though and will have to adapt my technique.

Edit: Just looked on DPreview and noticed that fuji have released a new version with "anti blur" on it. Thats what the S5500 could do with.

I've taken a few snaps during the cause of the day with the S5500. Bear in mind I haven't read the destruction manual yet so it was literally turn on and press the button. I'm just uploading them to an online album. Will post the URL when they're uploaded.

Richard: to show the 10x optical zoom, the one of the back of my car was taken at max wide angle and the one of the Skoda badge from the same place on maximum zoom.

Photos are at:http://www.byphotos.com/album/1632112

A couple of samples from my S5500 (Have played with the colours in photoshop a wee bit)

Thats some zoom. My girlfriend really likes elephants and I took this picture with my A202 on 2MP. I really do need the zoom.

  • 1 month later...

Ok, seeing as people have used their cameras for a bit now. Is the S5500 from Fuji still the camera to go for?
