Digital camera question - on a budget

Featured Replies

Ok, seeing as people have used their cameras for a bit now. Is the S5500 from Fuji still the camera to go for?

What do you want from a camera and how much do you want to spend :P:D

Only problem I've had is only the Dixons group seem to sell it and I've just got back from Currys and they wont budge on the price. Any news on when it's going to be out?

Just looked and its saying mid september. I can wait a week or so.

Before you decide a good site to browse through and some cracking samples from each camera tested:

I'm still very pleased with my Fuji S5500. And last time I look, refurbed ones were still available from fujifilm.co.uk at

Fuji have sold out :(

So it looks like just the Dixons group have them at

It's probably not quite what you want, Moose and probably a few notes too many, but we have the Sony DSC-H1 for just under

Daft question, what does the 36-432mm focal length bit mean in English? That does look a good camera but its that that kinda confuses me. All I want is a shoot and go, with a few play toys on top. But must have very good zoom ability. Oh and that one at Sony is

It means if you had a 35mm SLR then the 36-432 mm is the same as having a 36mm - 432 lens.

Most 35mm cameras came with a 50mm fixed focal length lens, and there are various different focal length lenses available:

135mm, 200mm, 250mm 300mm etc.

So in english it goes from a good wideangle for landscapes to a decent zoom.

36 x12= 432.BTW

Clear as mud...?

Errr, no sorry. As a novice, I'm guessing you would say go for a standard 35mm camera. The 36mm bit is say the minimum amount of zoom, but 432mm is the maximum? So why did Xav say its not any good?

I've got the wrong end of the stick haven't I?

Sort of' date=' I think he posted then realised the model he put a link to was a bit expensive for what you want.

As I have found, buying a decent digital camera is a minefield as there is so much choice out there.

did you look at

http://www.dpreview.com/.?

or buy a copy of a digital camera magazine that do reviews there are several that will help you make a choice.

Edit Ebuyer have this:

I do like that. That looks brilliant on the images. Even better than the S5500. It could be just the images they took mind on dpreview.

It will mean I'll need to buy new memory cards though but I'm gonna hunt down a good price on it.

it is down to sensor size. the sensor on that camera is quite small (like all point and click digitals) so when you compare it to a 35mm camera the focal range is effectively multiplied by the difference in size of the sensor.

my canon 20D has a sensor 1.6x smaller than a 35mm camera. my 17-85 lens has an equivelent comapred to a 35mm range of 27-136 conversly if you increase the size over a 35mm frame say a medium format camera your focal length decreases if you were to use a 35mm camera lens.

your focal range is good for telephoto but lacks a wide angle. personally I don;t see why they should comare it to a 35mm camera but hey ho thats life. you also lose DOF with a smaller sensor

Please dont confuse me anymore :mecry: All comments appreciated  I'm going off to Google that into diagrams etc for numpties. :D

I think at thend of the day it depends what you will take photos of, most cameras these days will take good photos.

I have to admit I have dug my old 35mm back out and am playing around with slide film at the moment

I was also confused with all the digital specs etc.

I think you will be lucky to get 10 times zoom for under

You could probably get the Minolta Dimage Z3 for under

I've gone and ordered a Minolta Z2. I'll have to see just how good it really is. But it does look like it can strut its stuff.

Nice one...post a few of the results when you have got it.

Z2 order got cancelled, I thought it might. Amazon were selling it for
