Rear Brake Replacement ?

Featured Replies

Afternoon,

Finally, after much rescheduling due to work, Im getting me new Discs and Pads on the front this afternoon.

Have a lad doing them for me - got scared thinking about it myself.

Next though, in new year i reckon im going to have to do the rears too.

But - Is it possible / difficult etc to replace the existing standard Drum brakes with Discs?

cheers :-)

Update - Fronts finally done, took some pics, holy jesus...

No steering judder, or grinding noises anymore.

and the best part - £78 + change for the parts from ECP inc shipping of 9.50 to Ireland.

and the guy only charged about £30 to fit.

Total cost to me $140 give or take vs €250 wanting from the dealer...

They wudve been fine for anuder while yet

I didnt take away the pads, but they weren't too bad thickness wise,

except for being rather worn on the edges from grinding into the corrosion. a lovely chamfered profile on all 4!

got your moneys worth out of them old discs.

i reckon they covered all 153000 mls on the clock...

Since you have stuck with standard fronts, with regards to the rears, it is way too much trouble at the cost without masses of benefit. You'll even have to change the handbrake cable setup.

It's an awful lot of ballache, imo.

See if someone's breaking a vrs and then make an offer on the entire beam set up....

Quite a lot if work but if its what ya want go for it dude... In the past I've undertook such s conversion on old escorts and golfs and although it was hard I found it worth the effort bro..... Also goo time to replace beam bushes etc:)

if its going to be a dose, its probly not worth it.

It was a thought i had while the car was on the ramp, and i had a quick look at the rear drums and shoes.

Probly going to replace them in the new year, but if it was straight forward to do, was thinking discs all round not a bad idea.

For a daily that i'm probably only going to keep another year (before trading for a younger mk1) it sounds like a lot of cost and time

that i'll not get back on it. might detour the outlay into a Cruise Control arm and getting the paintwork touched up -

ruddy clear coat peeling again, and colour match the door and bumper rub strips and grill surround :-)

Given i was complimented on how well she looks for her age and milage by the guy who did my discs, i think she deserves a little TLC

for her 10th birthday in March.

Fair play buddy....I would love cruise on my car as them motorway miles kill me right foot :)
