Octavia vRS - Turbo Siren /turbo on way out

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

After 160k of relatively pain free motoring (injections, EGR, DPF aside...) my turbo decided to suddenly increase in volume this morning.

As per usual threads I have researched the siren and it is much louder then normal. No issues with power loss I think, but after hearing it I limped to work at 40mph & 1200rpm to ensure I got here.

I am gunna try and get it to a friendly garage I use 40-odd miles away this evening to check for split? loose? hoses etc, and that if it is about to go have it go on me when i can still arrange hire cars etc through my AA breakdown rather then at 6am tomorrow morning/fast approaching Christmas.

Before I do that though, I am looking at the cheapest recon'd turbo I can find, with the car on such high milage I don't see the point in going for anything bigger. Can anyone offer any suggestions on where to go? I am Banbury/ North Oxfordshire based.

Secondly, anything I can ask the garage to check to help ensure it is the turbo/isn't?

It is a 2.0PD 56 plate vRS, that has had a very delicate life for the last 100k miles with pure long distance motorway miles & very rarely driven hard unless to occasional Italian tune up to clear the system. Always warmed up & cooled down.

160,000 miles is good for a turbo, however if looked after should be good for 200K+.

Saying that, mine went at 40,000 miles on my 2007 PD170 vRS.

I'm sure I've read on here about some type of pipe working loose which can also induce a louder than normal turbo siren.

Worth getting it checked out before assuming the worst.

I reckon a used reconditioned turbo (incl. part exchange) can be sourced and fitted for approx. £600 if you shop around.

Cheers for commenting!

Had the AA out and he checked it all over, had a listen and whilst he said it sounded slightly louder then normal he couldn't see anything wrong. No fault codes, excessive smoke etc so we agreed it might just be me being paranoid and to keep an eye on it.

Will eek it out a bit longer and see how I fair. I would class my car as mechanically well looked after. Always warmed up/cooled down, fully serviced bang on time by a very trusted garage and the vast majority of miles at a steady paced motorway driving with a keen eye on the mpg.

Will wait & see.

As for recon'ed turbos, Express Turbos down in Portsmouth was £340 delivered, with 1 year warranty and me sending my turbo back. They seemed the cheapest & seemed to be fairly knowledgable on it all.

The turbo on my Golf MK5 1.9PD made a siren noise when the engine was cold for 95,000 miles before it finally gave up the ghost, so don't panic too much.

Thanks for the confidence boost mate! :)

Driving home today still fearing the fact it was really quite loud until I turned the radio off, instead of it just being turned down - the siren instantly silenced itself! I was so shocked, surprised & ecstatic I nearly forgot I was driving! Re-grounding my amp on Sunday must have somehow helped it pick up from the alternator? Now I need to figure out how to mute that but utterly over joyed! :D

Now that is a result!!! I wish every turbo siren noise was that easy to fix, Nice one.

Ian

Thank you! Yeah wish everyone was as lucky as I am, wasn't a fun day yesterday! ;)

At 53000 miles ours had the siren sound and Skoda said its the booster valve sticking and not going back. They cleaned it and the noise went but did not last long so took it back and they said the 140bhp engine one you cannot buy the booster valve on its own, you have to buy a whole new turbo. At first they said its about £1000 but after when bill came in it was £765  and as it was the 4 year cam belt /pump and major service the total bill was about £1965

Never heard of the 'turbo siren' till i read this forum. Sadly I read it after some sort of failure on my 05 plate 105pd 1.9tdi Elegance. My turbo had been whistling for years and I never really noticed if it was like that since I bought her or started some time in between. I say sadly as she has one just over 80K and on thursday evening on my way to work I pulled away from a set of lights when I suddenly lost all power. A small puff of black exhaust left in my wake. I had no lights on the dash so suspect it is the turbo. I managed to limp on the last half mile to work at 20MPH. Any ideas from you petrol heads as to turbo or just a pipe, as has been mentioned as a possibility?

A certain amount of whistling is normal with most turbos. Your sudden loss of power sounds very like a boost pipe popped off somewhere to me.

Cheers Nick.

Never did update this one. It was the turbo blown. Free floating impeller and no oil due to a blockage in a very narrow lube hole = bang and a suitably large bill. Luckily my local independent sorted me out for a good price and all happy again.
