Aaargh! I've kerbed an Alloy

Featured Replies

Slightly p155ed off. An hour ago I had 4 perfect alloys and tires on my 6 month old Monte Tech. I've just driven and picked my daughter up from her school play and was effectively run up the kerb by a driver coming the other way who was overtaking parked cars on his side. The front near side wheel has a deep mark about 6/7 inches around the rim and a big chunk of tire has been gouged out. I will need to inspect closely in the morning to see if it safe to drive on. If not it'll be a call to Skoda Assist as I have no spare.

Does anyone have any idea what a replacement tire costs mine are Dunlops I think?

Also what colour are these rims painted as I'm going to have to look at getting it refurbed,is it likely that a mobile smart repairer will be able to colour match? Does anyone have any experience of this as I've only previously had silver alloys refurbed.

Thanks Dave

If its the same colour as the previous Monte Carlo's (as yours is a Monte Tech ???) then it's Skoda LF7S Granit-Met, it's a good match too :-)

Thanks Stu.

Check dealer price, as skoda alloys aint too expensive.

If you read about dunlops (on vrs) they aint too good so if you can afford to replace both fronts I would be tempted to

Also try Jeremy at www.reinventingthewheel.co.uk or .com.  They do first class repairs to Bentley wheels etc. and are at the Ashchurch/Tewkesbury junction.  You either leave the car with them for a couple of days, or drop the wheel off for a sameday service.

They matched a Titanium coloured 19" Audi wheel perfectly for £60+VAT and the repair was invisible.  So glad I discovered them...

Luckily for us it was only the flange of the 35 profile tyre which was ripped, and with no cord showing it wasn't an MOT failure either.  Easily glued down with some specialist rubber glue for £3.50 from Elwyn at Seastyle - a dive shop in Worcester.

Good luck - let us know how you got on.

I did this the other day. I now have two wheels with 6mm or so gouges out of the edge of the rim.

I'm considering over-tyre-ing when I replace them, for 215s to give some sidewall protection, as right now the rim is proud to the tyre!

I know I'll have to check with insurer and find a tyre place that will swap away from OE fit, but it might be worth it.

Thanks for this info,I'll give reinventing the wheel a call.

This sounds like a good idea,I may consider this as well.

Issue solved.

I've bought 4 lightly used Monte wheels & tires, 3 look perfect and I has a very light mark, hardly noticeable. All 4 tires excellent having covered about 3.5k miles.

Now what to do? I have 8 wheels. I may keep 1 as a spare meaning I'll have 3 to sell. 1 perfect wheel/tire,1good wheel&nearly new tire and finally the scuffed wheel and slightly damaged tire. What do people think they are worth?

Alternatively keep 4 for summer use and put winter tires on the other 4 although this way I still do not get a spare.

Winter tyres on the other 4 definitely, and one of them can be used as a spare for summer use as its only temporary (normally).

215s are the way to go, and I got some 17" Nexen Winguard Sports (which are OK even if not the best) for under £50 each plus fitting (try Justin at Worcester tyres if you're close).

I can't remember if the Monte wheels are also 17".  I also bought some 16" Maxxis MA-AS all-seasons for about 50% more in original 16" size as a match/spare tyre, but reckon I could have increased profile slightly (there's a lot of room on a Reaction) for a bit more ground clearance - although its questionable whether that would fit in the spare well.

Montes & vRS come as standard on 17" wheels, and 205/40 R 17 Tyres,  215/40 R17 are fine as replacements.

and a Skoda spare if you have one comes with a 15" Spare & 185/55 R 15 Tyre 'H' Rated.  so a Full Size, full load/speed rated spare is handy.

(If you have a Dunlop on it is probably directional, so a 50/50 chance you are carrying the correct one and no need to go slow until changed over.

The Fabia Reactions i believe come as standard on 16" Comet Alloys. Unless changed at the Dealership or by the owner.

Yes, perhaps I should have been less ambiguous but I can't edit my last post. Reactions are on 16" wheels, but I don't like the contrasting silver so have saved them for my son to reduce his future insurance implications.  Their unlowered suspension allows for larger diameter tyres to be run leaving insurance/warranty etc. issues aside.

I converted to 215/40 R 17 (fitted by the dealer prior to delivery) to improve look and protect my new black rims from my wife...

I was going to get a set of Silver Comet to use this winter,  after having liked the look of them in Black on the Reaction,

but not using the car, so never pursued getting some.

What Tyres came on the Comets.?

I Have a set of Black Gigaro with New Pirelli Zero Nero i could have swapped, but do not really need 16" Summer tyres,

george

They're on Conti SC2 from memory as I was looking at a "take off" deal with my local fitter, but decided to keep them safely stored so my son gets a "new" feel to the car when he gets it in a few years' time.  Of course, the tyres will have "aged" at that point, but they will have been stored well and teenagers aren't known for their mechanical sympathy.

Thanks for the offer though George;  I'll keep it in mind.
