Arggghhhh, Do people really choose a car like this?!

Featured Replies

Ok, a mate is after a new (to him) car. He currently has a ****ty old Focus on it's last legs and wants something newer. About 6 months ago we discussed him upgrading and he really liked my Fabia, was pretty much set on the idea to the point of choosing colours etc. He also really liked the Octavia but didn't think he needed the larger car.

Fast forward 6 moths or so, he has decided now is the time to buy a new car. In that time he has got a new job at a IT company, he didn't have any formal qualifications or anything but he has always managed to land on his feet in that sense. So he comes round to look at motors, no more is he interested in any Skoda, or Seat or VW. He wants a Audi, specifically a A4. Ok, so I start looking, he then says it must be a quattro, must be a diesel and must be a Sline. His budget doesnt allow for this, nowhere near tbh. So he shows me one he has found, 130,000 miles, dents all over from hitting the fence on the drive, a bit of a mess.

I ask does it have to be Sline? "yeah I dont like normal ones"

Ok, does it have to be quattro "yeah for the bad weather and when I do long trips"

Ok, does it have to be diesel "yeah for when I dont long trips" (once every other month)

I suggest a A3, "no the look like sales reps cars". Erm, so does the A4 then?

After a while I soon realise he is deciding what car he wants 99% on the image, he wants to look like billy big *******s at work. The only other car he will look at is a A6. Arggggghhhhhhh, how frustrating. I could understand if he never liked the other cars to start with but he did! When we looked before, Fabia, Octavia, Golf etc were all in line. Now they are all dismissed because they dont conduct the right image. After a bit longer I talk him round to the fact his 10-15min commute isnt going to be worth getting a diesel he concedes he would consider a petrol. Finds a 3.0 v6, I say well if you're going that far consider a S4 (older one), quicker, not much worse on fuel, less depreciation. No, his mrs says they dont look "sleek" because they have fatter bumpers. FML.

Look about at 2.0t petrols, find a nice estate, no, his mrs says it cant have a "big bum"?!

Shoot me now!

  • It's so when people ask what you drive, you can say "Audi Quattro". It doesn't matter if it's a battered old heap. He wants to be able to say that. It's an image thing.

The moaning has started. He has to go on a 120 mile trip soon, wants to borrow the fabia because it's costing him a fortune in fuel. Enjoy the quattro.....

People do generally think you are doing well if you drive an audi lol

I'm in IT, but working in Oxford, and with a few exceptions people just drive the oldest  or smallest car they can, it seems, so they don't need to care about buses hitting them or whatever. I tend to feel a bit of a douche when asked what I drive compared to them. Strange how perceptions change geographically.

He doesnt want a tt quttro sport does he?, very limited edition so he will look like a king amongst kings in the works car park (not my own views, as i hate the ****ing thing)

Just let him make his own mistakes :)

Audi do an a4 technik i think its called

Basically a loaded rep car (inside) has leather and sat nav and cruise control

Outside has a nice front bumper

Thats what id go for

I imagine the sad truth is that it's all in your mate's mind. Those folks at work probably don't give a poop what he's got in the car park. In reality people just don't notice these things - to busy rushing about getting home or getting set up in the morning, and to my mind any Audi (bar an R8) is a pretty "beige" car and won't turn heads. You're best off with something quirky like a Nissan Cube to generate conversations in the work kitchen.

Unfortunately my mum is a bit like this. My dad has liked all 3 of our Skodas and would love a Yeti. However, my mother wouldn't have one due to the badge, so he drives a Jetta. She also wouldn't drive a Kia or similar. Shame as she is missing put in the long run. I've given up telling him just do it and then ask for forgiveness!

Actually, i think a GeeWiz would be to good :bandit:

He'll end up in a nearly new Astra or Insignia.

Mrs will pester him into a new shoite car which he'll then hate but run for 4yr until it's falling apart but he'll still be tied into the 5/6yr finance.

Seen it many times.

Just show him this article at the bottom of this page

http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/b5/oil-pump-failure-passat-tdi.htm

The bosses son had an A4, S-line TDI and it failed with his wife, oil light went on she drove a few miles back home and by that time it needed a new turbo. Unless you stop immediately the damage is already done, as it says on the right hand side, even before the light comes on the damage could be done.

If we all liked the same things in life the world would be a boring place.

Why does think his work mates will be impressed with a 130k mile dented up heap of sh*te even if it wears an audi badge ? Lol

Haha seems like he doesn't even know what he wants himself. I'd leave him to it and just smile :)

I don't get the concept of wanting to be the same as everyone else. If I were him, I'd buy a nicely sorted classic. It'd cost a fraction of what the 130,000 mile Audi would but most people think classic cars are worth a lot (as long as you don't choose something boring like a mini ;) )

Give me a choice between an Audi and a skoda and I know what I'd choose.

I can't take the suspense.......

.......please tell us which one?

Id choose the audi if money wasn't an object :o

Unless it was an RS Audi I'd never have one.

But obviously it is an object, in which case you would buy the Skoda, and that's where the problem lies.

This isnt about choosing a Audi or any other car, this is about his method of choice. All you guys saying you want the Audi, are you choosing the Audi because you think it makes you look important at work? Or because you like the car?

I like it :)

Nice place to sit

The missus had one of those a4 techniks i mentioned. Was lovely place to sit in :)

I like my 4x4 Octavia because it does a lot, is very practical yet doesn't need show off. It just does everything I can possibly ask of it and doesn't give a crap about the badge.

However, if a friend called me up and said 'hey, I've just won big on the lottery, do you want a new car?' what would I ask for? A6 Allroad. Why? Because its the same, but better :)

I've had 2 x Skoda's and now an Audi.

Audi definitely has more refinement, Skoda is better value for money.

I only bought the S4 because Skoda don't / won't make a similar car.

Is the Audi worth the premium? in my case, yes. I really wanted a quick 4 door saloon & this is about as good as they get.

I certainly don't get hung up about the brand image, and sometimes sense a little anti-snobbery goes on from non-Audi owners, which I find frustrating as I like all good cars regardless of brand.

I think people should live & let live when it comes to their choice of car. Quite often the presumptions of why people buy cars are far off the mark :) Although in the OP's case his choice seems to be based purely on image, hey ho!!!

I'd choose a Seat... :giggle:
