Arggghhhh, Do people really choose a car like this?!

Featured Replies

Lol I don't hold out much hope for him.

Still, one thing to remember....

You advised him so it's your fault, it doesn't matter that you told him to buy something else.

  • It's so when people ask what you drive, you can say "Audi Quattro". It doesn't matter if it's a battered old heap. He wants to be able to say that. It's an image thing.

The moaning has started. He has to go on a 120 mile trip soon, wants to borrow the fabia because it's costing him a fortune in fuel. Enjoy the quattro.....

  • Audi seem to be the Apple of the car world IMO. Bought mostly for the image, regardless of how good or bad the car is.   *Hides behind sofa*   I'm in IT, but working in Oxford, and with a few exce

That's why I try to refain from recommended cars to non car people. Discussion here is fine as most of us are like minded.

:D I've already told him he is a ****. I'll update how it is underneath after I find out!

The funniest one I heard for this was a lad on our car forum a while ago. His mum wanted a Mk1 Matiz when they were still out because it was "cute". She didn't want a second hand one because they bought new everything. She didn't want to test drive it, because she knew she'd like it.

So the car was bought and finance arranged.

I forget the details, but I know what Mk1 Matiz's are like to drive. I seem to remember him saying there's a hell of a depreciation curve on month-old Matiz's  :giggle:

sounds like a nightmare to me mate, he will really struggle to sell that in 5 years (if it lasts that long). I paid £4k for my audi and it's clean as a whistle, most people who go in it think it cost me double that. I bought the audi because I loved the 1.8t VRS I had, I just wanted something a bit more refined and relaxed which is exactly what the audi is.

These people really do grind my gears!

Although when you are stuck to the bumper of an S4 having a dig and you look at his facial expression in his rear view mirror when a Skoda is literally about to overtake....Priceless.....

Best one was when i was being tailed by an Audi A4 convertible the guy and his misses, as they go to the outside lane they look at me and laugh...So i put my lead shoes on. His laugh was wiped off his face and she was laughing that his audi was literally destroyed by a Skoda! as i slowed down to level back up i pointed and laughed at the audi driver, gave his misses a wink and activated my warpdrive.

She loved it..

I can't stand these "executive types" who ponce around in cars they think look flashy.

I often laugh to myself, because my ratty gets far more attention than the sea of silver mercs, audis and beemers. Plus, it's usually a lot cleaner!

I also laugh at how Audi have changed. 15 years ago I was a massive Audi fan at school and got laughed at by others because they thought the S3, TT, etc were "****" and had nothing on mercs and beemers. Funny how a number of them are now execs... poncing around in Audis.

A badge is nothing - a car needs soul... character. Mine has bags of that and that's all I care about :)

I'd be wasting my time if I pointed out how much nicer an Octavia vRS he could have got for that money wouldn't I? :D

But not everyone sees cars like you do. Some people simply want a nice car straight out of the box and can afford a Merc, BMW, audi etc. It's people who buy a **** example of a  nice car that makes me laugh. Or people who get finance on a new car that they can't really afford, I know people in my town who live in council flats yet have brand new A4's and point out that it's a newer version of mine, I point out that I own my house and if I sold it to move into a rented house I could buy something a lot nice than the car they drive :-)

Oh I'm all for people buying nice cars, it's just the *attitude* that grips my ****. Why spend a crap load of money on a car in order to "impress" people, when you can't even be bothered to keep it clean?

The "I'm an exec in a merc / beemer / audi, get out of my way" just really drives me nuts. Saying that though, since I've ratted my car out, those in shiny cars tend to stay out of my way...

Or the people who say "I don't really care about what car I drive, as long as it gets me from A to B" then buys a brand new motor worth more than their house.

We he has been a (reasonably) lucky boy by the looks of it. It needs work, but nothing awful. The only real worry is a noise on start up once it's running it goes, plus wrong power steering fluid, needs a anti roll bar, 4 wheel alignment & a cat for the MOT (it has a de-cat). Other less important items include 4 buckled wheels (supposedly genuine RS6 wheels), Ta technix coilovers that dont go high enough to allow the car to drive over anything other than marble smooth road and a rear seatbelt that tried to kill be by only retracting.

Someone has obviously looked after it over the years, the inside has worn very well, everything works, heated seats etc etc. It does need work but for what he paid and the miles/no history I was expecting a dog so better than expected. Saying that, by the time he has fixed it up he would have probably spent the same overall as if he bought on with half the miles, his argument is that he knows what bits have been done on this form now on, where as even one with 100k on could be needing similar things. He is already moaning about the fuel though! :D He'll be moaning even more when I show him a clean pair of heels in the Fabia haha. I'll stick some pictures up of it when I get a chance.

"Reasonable miles (he wants to sell in max 5 years for a newer one)"

"He bought a 2005 A4 avant 2.0 TFSI, it is a quattro S line like he wanted but with no history and 200,000 miles on."

Potential buyers'll be queuing around the block for that one then...

Tell him to give me a holla. Sounds a minter

I can see this being a short lived car ownership

There's a fella who works at my place took out a loan for a few k to buy a 10 year old Merc C180, simply because it's the car he's coveted for over a decade. Nothing wrong with that in itself, providing you go in to a situation like that with your eyes open. He used to drive around in a (fairly dull but economical and very reliable) Toyota Yaris. He's gotten used to the running costs now but when he first got it he did nothing but complain about how expensive petrol was and how much it uses. Berk.

This all sounds a bit like a friend of mine!
Told me he wanted a car with this that and the other...........then said it had to be a mk5 Golf, because "everyone at work has them and says they are good"!!
Refused to even touch a skoda "cause its a skoda". Yet he was at the time driving round in an old mk1 Suzuki swift with bits missing or falling off all over it.
Finally convinced him to get a 1.9tdi golf as he was commuting 30 miles each way a day. Then complains the mpg is only high 30's/low 40's, so went out in it with him, seems he thinks 3rd gear until 45mph is fine, even if at a constant speed. Has no decided its too slow after my father in law in his 170 superb left him standing on the motorway.
So now.........he went and bought a mk5 GTi, went by himself to look and buy, (bearing in mind his technical knowledge means he cant undo a split pin) and has booked it in for a re-map already before he's even driven it!
So in the space of 2 years he has went from passing his test to a stage 1 gti. Yet all he wanted before was economy. Apparently the fact it was group 17 insurance made him want it. There's no winning with some people! So I share your pain wholeheartedly.

Try owning a bmw and getting out of a busy junction then

Nice one. That, and being regularly irritated by daft chavs was one reason I let my BMW go. And the water pump failing, closely followed by the power steering.

It's all horses for courses at the end of the day though isn't it.

I buy cars that I like because I love and enjoy cars and couldn't give a rats bits what badge it has on the front if it's a good car. And by good, I generally mean a lovely engine, or fantastic handling, or both.

Plenty of people (including many at work) see a car purely as a status symbol, nothing more and nothing less - and even if it's badly specced and drives like a dog as long as it has four rings / a blue and white circle / whatever on the front then it gets car park points and that's all that matters.

Similar to the discussion I often have with the sort of people who buy a brand new Chevy Spark (by way of example) because it's got a brand new number plate on it but would turn their noses up at an immaculate and far more capable 5/10 year old hatch.

Yes i've also noticed that. Always seem to get numpty's flying up behind me in a 30 in a chav bucket trying to prove something

Edited by BigJase88

Since debadging my 330 it got rid of a lot of the chavs - worth trying?

Still have issues with 1 series owners though :(

Well i have debadged my 320d

I think its maybe because its on H&R springs so attracts unwanted charvers in crap motors

Mine's pretty low on coilovers too (not comprised daily low though) but still seems to escape hassle. Not complaining though!

Just to follow up on my previous post about a friend who bought a gti and remapped it...
He rang me this evening, has now bought his wife a car. mk4 golf gti 1.8t. Bought it without going to see it (over internet i presume). With....wait for it...120k on the clock, no service history, and has got it home to find the engine light on!

Do I smack him round the head now, or just point and laugh when it all goes wrong?
