What does the key do?

Featured Replies

I have a new Octavia Elegance estate that has the KESSY keyless entry and start system. I'm in Australia, but I assume the vehicles are fairly similar. I can find no old style key locks anywhere on the vehicle, so my question is what does the fold out key on the remote do?

Deactivate the passanger airbag?

Surely there's a manual override in case vehicle electrics are faulty? Isn't there a hidden lock behind a face plate or something?

I've looked everywhere and checked the manual and can find nothing. (wow, that's a quick response!)

The key lock is inside the plastic in the door handle which clips off

See 'Emergency unlocking/locking' in the manual (page 248) for instructions.

Thanks, missed that. Not much chance of my wife doing that without breaking something

OT: Hey Ozoccy, how'd you manage to get a wagon so quickly in Australia?

I'm in Perth and have to wait until April for mine to arrive. Mine was the first sale of the dealership. I was amazed they had no wagons for sale. I ordered a 1.4 like yours, Ambition Plus though. Did you have much choice in spec/colour etc.?

Thanks, missed that. Not much chance of my wife doing that without breaking something

You missed something and it was only on page 248  :giggle:  Now thats what I call a "Schoolboy type error" LOL

And what on earth is a an "Ambition Plus" :wonder:  That gotta be some kinda marketting ploy, right

Went and physically checked, and the plastic cover pops off quite easily.

Ambition Plus is roughly equivalent to SE in UK. They have simplified the specs available in Australia to keep costs down and, you'd think, make it easier to keep up with supply of frequently-ordered models. The base Ambition is pretty basic: Swing radio, steel wheels, 7 airbags. Plus adds 17 in wheels, Bolero radio and a few other things. I think it's the sweet spot for me. Elegance has stuff I don't care for but, if it meant getting one straight away, I probably would have ponied up the extra.

I managed to get a wagon with Tech Pack, so all the goodies bar the LED lights which are missing for some reason. Got a good price and my wife's old car needed major maintenance so needed to make a quick decision. Also suspect that prices will go up with the dropping AUD. You should be able to get the Ambition Plus in Perth unless they've sold all the floor stock.

Wife had keyless as must have after driving my car, which meant we couldn't get a Golf, which was my first preference, as it's not available in Oz. Strange how different countries get different options, same with the Octavia seems we get some stuff and not others.

Really happy with the Octavia , the 1.4 TSI is a pearler, quicker than the Honda Euro it replaced and uses less fuel. The real surprise is the Canton/Columbus stereo. Awesome sound especially if you play from a quality source, first car where I won't be replacing the stereo. Also the ACC is a real surprise.

After going for a long drive with the family, today wife and I are happy we didn't get the golf.

Edit: Just had a look at the UK prices and seems I got it for less than the UK rrp, so pretty happy. But did pay a bit extra for 6 year warranty.

So you can get ACC in Oz, but here in the UK it has been withdrawn!

I got one of the first in the country, so who knows what will happen with the next batch. Mine came with 18 inch wheels and the bi-xenon lights but no LED, lane assist is not available here, also can't get electric seats and a few other options that you get.

I thought the dealers weren't selling demo models yet in Oz? I assume you got the DSG?

I was dead set on a manual, I prefer to save the $ and I like manuals anyway. Plus I am a little wary of a 7-spd DSG. I test drove the 1.4 DSG sedan and it was fine, but I insisted on a manual. The dealer couldn't really understand why! (I think aussies are generally a lazy bunch, I reckon 80% are autos here). Took a small risk ordering a wagon in manual having not tested it, but all the reviews are great and we need a bigger car pronto, sprog on the way.

Glad to hear you like the 1.4. I really hope the Octavia sells well here, it deserves to. Sadly I see about one Skoda a week on the roads, very rare beasts. We too were considering the Golf but the extra space and 103 kW engine as standard on the Octavia made it a winner. Just peeved about the wait! Yeah the price here seems pretty good, especially for some options, when compared to UK. (I think this may reflect recent weakness of the £ relative to Euro). I agree that price in Australia might go up soon though, if the UK price rises are anything to go by.

[And another thing. Anyone else having trouble replying to messages? The reply box takes ages to appear, often it does not and I have to frequently refresh the page. When it does appear, often the reply button won't work Frustrating! And where are my smilies?? This happens on both Safari and Chrome (Mac OSX 10.8)]

Our last car was a manual, but after driving the DSG I'm sold on it. I think the problems are pretty sorted and the engine is well within the limits of the gearbox, but having said that I spent 1500 on the extra warranty. Could have got it cheaper direct or with some haggling, but I'd already pushed them.

Was planning to get a diesel, but super impressed by the 1.4. Got 8l/100km out of the first tank and currently running at less than 7 for the second so that will be another positive.

Yeah I would have considered a diesel, but the engine choices are crazy here: for the uninitiated in the UK, you can only get the diesel if you go for Elegance spec, and then only with DSG. Looking at >$35,000 IIRC [EDIT: make that $40k!]. Seeing as I didn't want Elegance nor DSG, it made the engine choice really quite straightforward!

Where in Oz are you ozoccy?

Does Skoda have fixed price servicing in the UK?

Edited by ozoccy

Depending on how you purchase it. If you buy it with the 0% finance option, you get 3 yrs free servicing thrown in.

Think they also have fixed price servicing as well. Not sure on price. I wont be using it anyway. As soon as the 3yrs are up, i'll be off to an independant garage. Much cheaper, and we have one down the road which we can rely on.

Ozoccy, a couple of questions if you don't mind (sorry to pounce but you're the only Aussie I've found anywhere with a new Octavia!):

1. It seems in the UK that the space-saver spare in alloy-equipped Octavias is in fact a standard steel spare (http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/298692-vrs-space-saver-spare/). Can you please confirm that this is the case in the Aus version? Or did you get one of those nasty skinny space savers that you see sometimes? They'd be bloody useless anywhere out of town.

2. Did you get boot nets as standard? (Big deal I know, but just wondering)

3. Considered a tow bar at all?

4. Even better, you're in Perth. Melville or Barbagallo?

Thanks! (Maybe we could start an Octavia in Australia thread)

Isnt there a keyslot hidden somewhere?

Someone posted about a hidden key in some vag cars that can be used to steal them using the hidden ignition slot.

  • Author

Hi treendale, answers;

1. Spare is steel 205/55 16, looks like nothing bigger would fit in the space.

2. No boot net, was hard enough getting them to sell the demo. It basically had no km south on the clock.

3. No, wouldn't want to tow with the DSG, manual should be fine. We use my car for towing our off road camper.

4. Melville, what about you.?

I so where is the hidden ignition key hole.

Edited by ozoccy

Getting mine from Barbagallo. I was supremely lazy and didn't both going SOR to give Melville a visit, we live just down the road from Osborne Park. I managed to get Barbagallo to shift a little on price, though barely. I did specify the boot nets to be included at least, even though the dealer thought they were standard (ha! turns out they are not, so got the tiniest of victories there). Seeing as I had to custom order I went for the rear LEDs - the one thing you're missing, ironically - and race blue. Dumped the electronic tailgate that they were including on all of their custom builds by default. Can't really see the benefit myself.

For the tow ball I am only really interested in putting a bike rack on. It seems a rear-mounted rack is less hassle to use than a roof one, but you do have to get the tow ball. Figured it would give me the option of pulling a trailer for those special trips to the dump ;-)

Good luck finding that keyhole. Thanks for checking out the wheel, I'm satisfied with the 16 incher.
