VRS space saver spare

Featured Replies

Could somebody with a Vrs and the spare wheel confirm what it is for me?

I've had 2 dealers swear blind that the Vrs spare is a proper, full size, full speed rated wheel with no mileage limitations despite the'space saver' name.  However one told me it was a 17" steel rim (I guess with a 225/45 r17 92Y tyre?) The other said it's an 18", same as on the car, just a steel rim.  Could someone who had it confirm?

Also, is the jack any good?  I don't expect much... But.. Well... some emergency jacks are total rubbish.

Ta.

I'd be interested to know aswell, I've gone for the spare option and I'm sure the dealer said its a space saver??

I had a look in a vrs boot at a dealer today and it was a narrow space saver. However the dealer has changed the wheels so might have done the spare too.

Can't answer you sorry, but I'd also like to know about the space saver in the 1.4 TSi that comes with 17in alloys. At least in Oz if you order the car with 16in steels you gets full size steel spare; for all other wheels it's a "space-saver". The tyres on the 17in rims are wider so it is possible they wouldn't fit in the spare wheel well, but a 16in steel would be fine as a spare. If I get one of those crappy thin brightly-coloured things, I'm getting a proper wheel instead. Could be 100s of miles away from a garage with a flat over here.

I'll be cancelling it if it is. As I said to the dealer,  space savers are #£%& and for £75 I'll get a steel rim from a scrappy, an appropriate part worn tyre and a cheap jack.

Or spend and get a decent tyre and swap it for a worn one in 30k when I get the other 3...so long as I get an 18" steel rim

It's an 18" skinny space saver. There's a big thread on it here somewhere but can't link as in on the phone

Not sure I'd get that jack under the car if I had a flat, but you get the idea. A decent jack and a proper wheel for about £55.  Think I'll be getting back to the dealer to change my order!

125/70R /18 is the tyre size and it's on a steel rim, definitely not a full size spare! The jack is a fit for purpose item, but if you're going to use it for changing wheels around (swapping fronts to backs/putting winters on etc) I'd upgrade to a more robust item.

I have the space saver in my VRS. Wouldn't bother with the jack. Skoda Assist will change the wheel for you anyway unless you are in a rush of course.

Many thanks gents. I think I'll ring the dealer and remove the spare from the order then.

Now on a search for a used 7.5J x 18 ET51 with 5 bolt pattern on 112 Pcd. (The mk4 golf wheel has a different pcd)

I have a full size steel spare on my MkII VRS estate and asked to swap it into the MKIII I have ordered and the dealer told me it won't fit as the well in the boot is sized for the skinny spare they now supply so have ordered one of those as its better than silly foam.

I did read a thread on here saying due to the size of the front brake discs the old full size steel spares wont fit......

The wheel well is full sized and will take a full size wheel, it's only the vRS that comes with a skinny space saver, other models have a full size steel wheel.  You need a 17" to clear the front brakes, hence the 18" spacer saver.

yep, I fell foul of that one as I was going to do the same.  As below needs to be minimum of 17" or use the 16" on the back (smaller brakes) and swap the faulty wheel around.  This was too much of a PITA for me so I changed my order to add a skoda spare.

Ah thanks! I just came back to ask someone to confirm a full road wheel fits the boot and it's already answered!  I did try and answer this in the dealership by looking in the boot, the well looked big enough but had no wheel in at all so couldn't be sure.

So if you order a non-vRS model but with 17in alloys, and it states that it comes with a space saver, do you think it is a skinny one or a full size steel? If it's the latter, why bother calling it a space saver?  :wonder:

It'll come with a full size 16" steel spare.  They call them space saver because they still have the same restrictions on them due to being a different size to the other wheels, for example you're still limited to 50mph.

cool thanks Neily.

I can confirm this, my Elegance with 18s has a 6.5Jx16 steel spare with 205/55R16 tyre. As it is a different size it is classed as a temporary spare wheel. AFAIK VAG don't do a suitable 17 or 18" steel wheel, so if you want full size you need to buy another alloy.

I am on the hunt for a used 7.5j x 18 ET51 from a scrappy.  There are plenty of cars running around on 225/40r18s, Mercedes c class, BMW 3 series and o presume a4 Audi's to name 3 so hopefully there are a few appropriate wheels in scrapyards. I've yet to check the pcd and offset on them though....I hope skoda isn't using weird sizes.

Good god, having never been interested in after market wheels I'm only now learning how much detail there is to ensure the right size.

Does anybody know the centre bore / spigot size for the Vrs?  57.1mm perhaps?

It's looking likely that mk 6 golf stock 'detroit' rims will be correct (no surprise there). I'm get to check Audi a3 a4, seat exeo or Leon wheels.

Neiln have a Look on Ebay matey loads of used one on there, you might be Even tempted to buy a Set of 4 for winter use, over Here in Germany we put our winter Boots on from October through to Easter Time . Happy Shopping.

Centre bore is 57.1mm, 5x112 PCD.

You need ones with an ET between 45 and 50 depending on width of the rim. 6J rims should be ET48.

It's a big puchase you've made so why not just bite the bullet, go to your dealer and say please get me a spare for this car?    Then you'll know it'll fit right and you've had no hassles trapsing across the country.  Sure it may be an extra few quid but is that really significant given that you've just bought a new car?

It's rubbish having to get your own spare wheel, in my opinion they should all be provided with them FOC at the point of sale.  I wonder how many delays are caused on the nations A roads and motorways by people with a shredded tyre unrepairabe with a dodgy can of foam who are then forced to wait for a recovery van to bring and fit a new tyre instead of just changing the wheel with the one in the boot.  It's madness.
