VCDS lite greyed out basic settings

Featured Replies

Hi I am testing if I can get the throttle body to re adapt as and when I clean it. I have fully registered VCDS Lite using a Gendan KKL cable. I assume that I should be able to view more than just fault codes in the engine module? When I test the interface it says that latency is fair . I can communicate with the ECU and all other ECU's ok. Any suggestions as to why everything but fault codes is greyed out? The engine is a 1.6 16v petrol in a seat leon 1 (2004)

Not sure about VCDS lite but on the older versions there was a screen, I think the 'about' one, where you could confirm that the software is properly registered. Have you had a look at yours?

Reigstered as in paid the full amount?

If you merely registered as you being a user, as in you've not paid for the full VCDS, then a lot of settings / options will be greyed out.  This is why they offer the LITE version as a taster to encourage people to get the full kit.

when i was using the lite version they used to give you a serial number to put in after you PAID, then it unlocks all the greyed out functionality.. don't know if they still do it the same

Paid /registered/ sure it was working before. I updated the software to version 1.2 and now it won't read anything. I seem to remember spending some time talking to Gendan to get it working previously , playing with baud rates and such. Anyone got any idea

The fix was was to alter the com port settings to 2400 and the send receive setting to 2048 ,with latency set to 2 msec. I left VCDS at default settings and could access all the controllers including the Skodas ECU which I was previously missing.

Never had any similar issues but I just got the full HEX/CAN from the start and never had trouble when updating or in use.

The ECU for the BCB engine (1.6 16v used in the SX spec) is very picky and hard to communicate with. When using a cheap cable as well as fiddling with comms settings you need to have the right phase of the moon and the wind blowing in a favourable direction for it to work.

That sounds about right. It doesn't help that my Samsung Netbook is poverty spec with an atom processor running Windows 7 basic. It does feel like one day it work then the next it won't, but at least I know what to try to fix it now. I bought my original subscription to VAG COM around 10 years ago when I had a crashed Fabia to repair. I would love to be able to the ross tech cable , but for now I will persevere

To be honest I think its the cable rather than the computer. I have used cheap cables with a variety of laptops and these problems gave occurred regardless of the computer spec.

IIRC you have the same issues with some ECUs for the V6 TDi engines as well.

I use a poverty atom spec processor netbook too - although it is slow, never caused any issues with the running of VCDS itself - It just takes an age to start up and shut down.  I must get something different....

Trouble is if you buy a new PC then you have to pay for VCDS lite again. I moved mine a few times over the 10 years I have subscribed and they have said never again which is fair enough I suppose.

Another reason to buy the pukka cable then, you can use that on as many laptops / netbooks as you like!

I am currently on about my 5th one since I bought my cable (directly from Ross-Tech)

If you've already paid for a VCDS license, then you should be able to get a modern cable at a discounted rate, have a word with Gendan or Ilexa.
