1.3 MPI Oil Drain Plug Torque

Featured Replies

Before I drop the oil on my wife's newly acquired 1.3 can anybody confirm the oil drain plug torque please? Just looked in the Haynes manual and its 48 lbft...surely not!?!

65 Nm = 48 lbft

i do them up tight, then about an 1/8th of a turn more. Wipe it off, start it up and if it dont leak then job done. I cant tell u exactly as i have the same haynes you have :) maybe its 48 Nm? or 4.8 lbft?

Thanks for the reply. I'm always wary of overtightening sump plugs as they don't need to be really tight - usually a fresh copper washer and about 20 lbft on every car I've ever done.

I've never torqued a sump plug nut. I just do them up tight with a normal ratchet. If it don't leak job done. And that's after about 40 years of doing things, with /without a new sump washer.

If your worried about overtightening haynes says between 36-48 lbf ft on the favorit (exact same type sump plug)

And ,it's a tad dificult to overtighten a sump plug lieing on yer back under a car .

Thanks again for the replies. Got to be the easiest car to work on as everything seems to be so accessible. Ended up tightening it up to 26 lb ft as anything more seemed too much.

I always, always use torque wrenches as everyone has a different idea of 'just right'. If you've ever had to sort out an overtightened steel sump plug in an alloy sump you'll understand why...
