Police asking for your dash cam footage!

Featured Replies

It's been demonstrated that those speed detector signs that flash your speed at you as you approach, have a greater calming effect on traffic than camera's

Surely the idea is to make folks think about approaching danger and get them to drive more safely

Wouldn't approaching danger normally be advertised by speed limits and warning signs?

Prevention is better than prosecution The unmarked police car is the embodiment of what's so drastically wrong about the police's & co's approach to road safety A marked car, whether patrolling

You are so so wrong, on so many levels People have fought and died for this country, against notations like that

Covert surveillance has it's uses but they're pretty few and far between outside of serious crime and fraud investigations.

I wouldn't have an issue handing over dash cam footage, but it would be in the right circumstances and I'd make sure what I'm sending is very unlikely to incriminate myself before I'd do it.

I also agree that the police have, through government mandate, now forgotten about the role of prevention of crime. If they put out marked patrol cars which then cause the traffic to behave they will get no arrests and won't make their targets.

Blame the politicians.

Aspman I truly believe there simply aren't enough of them to prevent crime any more. Having had involvement in our local neighbourhood watch i've seen our local beat bobbies reduced from six to two. They cover the same area for the same hours but are now only at a third of what they were- its obvious they cannot do what they used to do. And as in this case its impossible for the police to be everywhere all the time so do need help from the public, Its also a complete myth that police have targets for numbers of arrests or tickets issued. Council parking wardens on the other hand...

Blame the politicians.

Senior police-folks are politicians these days

politicians of course who haven't been selected via any form of democratic process, and not accountable to the general public in any meaningful fashion

I would hope that an overwhelming body of evidence from folks drivecams would help demonstrate to the police and their like that the most dangerous drivers on the road probably never get near the speed limit

PCCs are elected and responsible for senior police officials. Indirectly they ARE elected and ARE accountable via PCC elections. That was the whole point of the government spending so much money on setting them up.

Believe me i'm against this constant war on speed- why is it the more advanced we become the slower we go? A shed load of speeds have been reduced around here for no reason.

This stretch of dead straight, no junction and no footpath dual carriageway was dropped to 60 a couple of years back and to 50 last week. In all the years I've lived here i've not heard as so much as a bump on this road. Its totally unwarranted but no doubt plays to the perception that lower speed = safety. I'd love the demonstration to show how dangerous driving is rarely about speed. I'd love your point to be proved and I be allowed to drive my well maintained vehicle within my IAM abilities.

However whilst I suspect camera owners would be demanding heaven and earth if the footage was for a wrong against them, nothing will change if they don't extend the courtesy to someone else in need.

Just one for you to remember, unless the police car has a CALIBRATED speed camera and they have physical proof of you speeding then all they can do is pull you over and tell you off! i.e

They rely on you admitting you are speeding, so if you stick to your guns and insist you were only doing 30, you cannot recieve point! obviously doesn't work if your doing stupid speeds,i.e 60 in 30! (would then fall under dangerous driving) but if thats the case then you deserve to get caught! but as soon as you say, "ok well i might have been going a little fast officer," then they have grounds to charge you!

what i'm trying to say is, the dash cam couldn't be used for speeding motorists, as most of them dont have speedos for proof and even if they did they would have to be calibrated regularly otherwise it would be difficult to make it stick!

oh and if you get caught keep your mouth shut! lol

Personally i will be fitting a dash cam, because i am sick of getting angry at other people acting like knobs on the roads and knowing that all i can do ignore it, (or follow them and have it out with them.) it's about time some drivers got a wake up call!

I will post my Reg number later so you know to avoid me in the future! lol

Police have a calming influence. That to me can also be read another way- "I am unable to police myself, and am adamant I must break the law, so want to know when to slow down". Well the answer? Slow down now! If you dont speed you wont get caught. No there arent enough police around anymore. Agreed. So lets make it easier by policing ourselves. We know what the speed limit is, we have seen the sign telling us what the speed limit is, and yet people still speed. So whats the problem when you are caught? How many times do you need to be warned? Your driving lessons. Driving test. Speed limit signs on the roads. Cameras popping up about the place. Its all a warning, yet people fail to listen to it. Yet you seem to want even more warnings before you think its fair to be caught. How many warnings??

Now I am not one of these that goes round saying it is safer if you drive slowly. This is absolute rubbish. The amount of times ive hurtled up towards a car going slower than a lorry. Its extremely dangerous on a motorway. I also think it may be time to increase the speed limit on some parts of the motorway network.

Now onto surveilance. Again it has been taken too far. People have died for this country against notations like that? Sorry, but youve taken my comment too far. I meant against criminals. Criminals are sneaky and clever. So you often have to be the same to catch them. I have no problem with these spy agencies going undercover to keep the country safe. Its often necessary. So i have no problems with unmarked cars driving down a motorway.

Oh, and no, i am no goody two shoes. Have i sped in the past? Yes (albeit not a lot). Would i moan if i got caught by a camera or unmarked police car? No. Its my fault.

I am also not getting into the debate on whether speed kills or not. All i am saying is, there is a law, and people are breaking it. Therefore it is fair if caught. Now, you say marked cars have a calming influence. Well actually, so can cameras and unmarked cars. I wouldnt dare speed anymore. Because the cameras have had a calming influence on me.

Oh yes they could. Time the interval on camera it takes for two points to pass the edge of the video frame. got out to the same point and measure the distance, Speed = distance/time . Even if you don't trust the time on screen the codec used will have a set frame rate which can be measured.

No elected PCCs in Scotland.

Now that could be funny. You send your footage in to help the police for another incident, and whilst checking your footage, realise you were going too fast! I call that killing two birds with one stone. Marvellous idea!!!!

ANPR, now there's a great idea!?

Obviously if you had any form of recording device in your car and you happened to get involved in somethiong where people were hurt or property lost or damaged in a big way you'd be some sort of ****hole to not provide the police with the evidense they need, to some degree the same scenario as calling the cops if you see someones house neing broken into. Yep thats great, no brainer, help where you can.

The trouble is when you go out of your way to think of others and make efforts to help build a nicer world for everyone it often ends up coming back on you in an unexpected way. There are many ways this happens and the posts above certainly make a point.

You could be in your car the very same week you gave the rozzers a nice tasty vid of Mr thug forcing someone off the road and then be in a possition where you make an error yourself be it inadvertantly or not, could be late for work and going a touch fast, could of just made an error of judment, hasty decision, not caused an accident but have however been a bit silly, naughty or stupid. You get pulled, Mr copper see's your device and decides he's going to take it as evedence to use against you. Fair enough if you get a sensible one he will just tick you off and realise you're not actually trying to kill every one on the roads without a care in the world but.......... what if you get a jobsworth retard with a chip on his shoulder and a point to make against say people with spikey hair, folk that drive green cars, have tinted windows, or obviously more money than him. Then you have a problem and if this bell end wants make something of nothing your stuffed.

This is the real world, we are all people and we all mess up, anyone that claims they dont ever make mistakes is either a liar or very deluded. You dont always need some big head to come along and treat you like a fool for being a **** on the odd accasion. Anyone with any morals and self respect will beat themselves up without outside intervention if they know they have genuinely done wrong by someone. I do agree that there are a huge amount of people around these days that are just blatently horrible nasty selfish scumbags and will do whatever it takes to make out that it's not them thats in the wrong, including paerents of out of control kids and will back there yobbo's up even if they know their child has just set fire to all the bikes in the rack at school. However, there is a need to protect yourself against the do gooders that arent able to tell the difference between Mary Poppins and Cruella Deville.

And yes I have had direct experience of what I'm talking about.

Bloomin heck, I leave the thread for 10 minutes and now look at the state of it...... I doubt that at this stage the idea of the Police or CPS etc is that this could be a handy money spinner to get evidence and try and do the driver too. Of course if you were to send in footage of yourself driving like a waste of skin moron which then happens to show an incident, id expect you to get done too.

I have been running cameras in all my cars and bikes for 5+ year every single meter my personal vehicles have covered has been at the time recorded, bar when camera failures etc happen. I have nothing to hide in my driving and anything I may do which is incorrect I am fully accountable for just as if it were a Police officer who witnessed it in person. It's a crying shame there are not more police on the roads just stupid cameras that habitual speeders slow down for then plant it again and all other forms of bad driving is completely missed, but that's another matter.

I fail to see any argument in here if you have a camera, nice one. If you don't, nice one. If you drive in a way which you know you shouldn't or wouldn't do in front of the Police as a matter of routine, it's not big and it's not clever, grow up and stop being a danger to the rest of us.

Wish i caught the bus driver on dash cam yesterday, he crashed into a bus stop while forceing his way down a cycle lane on single road! everyone sitting in the traffic was pulling into oncoming traffic to let him past! i refused to be bullied over so i got a barrage of hand gestures and flashing light!!! :@

Now i'm quite a big guy i'm ex forces and i wont back down from an argument, so as i unfolded myself from the interior of the 500 to go and find out why this particul driver was such a t%$t! my missus started crying and screaming at me, forcing me back in the car! lol

Needless to say i put a complaint into the bus service and i will ensure that i never allow a bus out a juction ever again! lol,

just lucky my bird was there to keep me in check because i had had a bad day and dont know where i would have stopped

When he finally got to the end of the single lane and it split in 2 he was less than 5mm from hitting my car! if he had i would have taken chase and wrapped my 3ft torque wrench around him!

luckily the busses have cameras all over them so the company in question will review it and disaplin the driver appropratly!...... doubt it tho!

I HATE BUS DRIVERS!!!!!

If the Police want me to do their job for them, they can supply me with the training and Blues and Twos first.

If the engine cover isn't fixed open at 45 degrees to the surrounding body panels, it's not an Abarth!

True to form, it's 4 months old and i'm going to get the new Dash cluster fitted on the 1st! no abarth dealers in aberdeen so thats a trip to Edinburgh or glasgow!

But on the plus side it gives a Fabia VRS a run for it's money! lol

(4 months after buying the Fiat i went and bought another VRS!) what does that tell you about it? lol

I didn't realise the schematics for their job was to be omnipresent in deity-like fashion. You'd refuse to hand over footage that would assist you in any manner then

There isn't really an argument from my POV Fubar, I just can't understand why someone who could help would refuse to. After all i'm certain such footage would be handed over in a flash should the owner be wronged and that's a level of selfishness I can't understand or abide.

Taking my name in vain? That's what I said also.

Sorry I thought your post was aimed at me in a negative manner so thought i'd explain.
