Am i just unlucky?

Featured Replies

Well, i have had my Superb for 1 year now and i am not sure whether i am impressed or not.....not with Skoda....but VW and their supposed build quality.

I have had several problems with the car since i got it....

1.  When i picked it up the twin boot system didn't work and it took the garage 2 attempts to fix it ....turned out to be a broken wire in the loom - only fixed by the dealer because the fault was present before i bought it...i spotted it on the test drive.

2.  Summer arrived and my Aircon is woefully inadequate....back to the dealers.....who manifestly failed to diagnose anything wrong....although even now it takes ages to get cold....much much longer than any car i have ever owned.

3.  Had DSG oil service done and the dealer didnt put enough oil in...but you try proving that to them ...so i topped it up myself!

4.  DPF Pressure Sensor failure.  Again fixed it myself due to dealer not being able to get the part in quick enough to do it in the timescale for me to get back to work....despite me being able to get the part required on the same day from the VW dealer down the road.

5.  Warning light for engine fault came on on the way home for Christmas......called out the RAC (1.75 hours to arrive) under the Skoda Assist program.  Managed to get home and booked car into dealers again (still under used car warranty)....they diagnosed a break in the engine wiring loom to the Boost Pressure Sensor and then tried to charge me £200 to solder 2 ends of wire together because the used car warranty does not cover wiring.  I politely refused their kind offer to rip me off and did it myself!

My main gripe is with the supposed Subject Matter Experts that profess to be Skoda dealers.  I am a fully qualified Vehicle Technician and have the tools and the ability to do all of this stuff myself (the problem is i will invalidate my warranty if i do any work myself because i am not employed as a Technician in a garage any more so do not have access to a Receipt with a VAT number on it or a stamp) - i am now a chartered accountant which is less oily but not as much fun.

I must add however, that Skoda are not the only brand that i have had similar problems with.  A BMW i once owned had a leaky headlight washer which took 3 trips to the dealer and ended up with me fixing BMW's mistakes.

Now i write this not to moan and seem like i am unhappy.....the car is in all other repects excellent. BUT...if i could have paid less for the car and not had the useless warranty (as it turned out) i think i would be a little more content.  I would have fixed the problems myself anyway and saved £90 in DSG oil change fees that have been incorrectly done......

So over to you fellow posters.....am i just unlucky.....?

It is not what I have experience with my dealer who have been proactive and helpful so I would suggest perhaps a crap service/dealer.

Given your forum name, perhaps you are wishing it on yourself  I have found most main dealers only have an incentive to make money out of their franchise, whereas a recommended indie`s reputation is based on actually satisfying each customers requirements, else their business would rapidly vanish. I know that doesn't help with warranty repairs, but some are better than others. Letting others know which dealer has given poor service should be a step in the right direction, as good dealers are sometimes willing to contribute to maintain a good local reputation. I have an aircon rattle and an intermittent sat nav fault at the moment and I know that it will be a battle to prove them under warranty; " we can`t find anything wrong, Sir"

Well I got my Superb 6 weeks ago or so.  I phoned the salesman again today to chase the missing service history book, handbook, and umbrella that he was made aware of.  He had completely forgotten!! :(

The car was valeted before I picked it up apparently.  A monkey with a sponge could have done a better job and the inside had clearly just had a quick hoover.  Grill and bumper were cracked but due to the awful weather was not spotted by me before driving away and now the car is at the dealer up the road as the clutch failed.  They cannot look at it till tomorrow as they are so busy.  It would be fair to say I am ambivalent about Skoda thus far.

Maybe i should change my name to reliableskodaexcellentdealers...or similar to change my percieved luck or lack of....lol

You never know. :giggle:

Come on, who are these dealers ?

Come on, who are these dealers ?

Are we allowed to name them?

Then again there is a dealer section :-)

Your name is all right, mate.

Different and unique at least! :-)

VAG not as reliable as they lend u to think.

JD Powers shows then up pretty good too.

But then they are no where as bad as land rover.

But overall Skoda the most reliable of the whole group.

It maybe sods law that u having so many problems in such a short amount time.

It could also mean u just got a lemon (always a bad batch in the production).

My dealers are ok.

But then I haven't had any major problems

Or niggling trivial recurring issues to annoy the dealers with.

But u have a decent car, from a dealer, with warranty.

So u shud demand their attention and to fix it til u are content!

Can I ask wot year or mileage is car?

Just my 2pence...

Good for you that you are able to fix niggling problems yourself. I am also a retired engineer with a wide engineering background and can fix most things electrical, electronic or mechanical, but I really pity those unable to do this and thus are at the mercy of dealers and independents. Touch wood my 2-year old Superb has been exactly that and hopefully will continue to be as it is definitely the best car I've ever owned.

I agree entirely and it really does upset me that many many people are getting ripped off at dealers because they know no different.  I wouldn't have the nerve to try and rip people off like that....do these people have no shame!

One of the service guys even said to me he doesn't think I am capable of fixing such a complex car......I nearly broke some ribs I laughed so hard!!

My car is a good car...don't get me wrong, but if I was one of the people getting seen off by the dealers I would be looking to get rid of it purely on a 'how much is the next problem going to cost me' basis.

And in answer to the questions about naming and shaming the dealers, then an internet search of the 2 closest dealers to me will probably give the game away, but in the interests of maintaining my professional ethics etc I can neither confirm nor deny that this is the case or not! :bandit:

Hi  jinxgj,

I would say you are unlucky to

a) have bought a Superb with so many faults

B) be tied to a dealer and their charges because of their warranty.

I was lucky as a friend of mine was a mechanic and I could always trust him to do a good job and be honest with me. He's now changed career and I will have to go to an independant when my Superb needs a service or other work doing, but luckily a quick google found a highly recommended one not too far from me. I've had my 4 year old car for 3 months now and NOTHING has gone wrong yet. Personally, I have never bought a car from a dealer and would not use them for a service as they are usually too expensive and impersonal.

Your luck has got to improve soon

The level of your unluckiness depends on mileage of your car :-)

But in one way or another - everything falls apart sooner or later. I am was using variuos company cars - from new to 3 year old (120.000 km or so). All of them had bigger or smaller problems. The most reliable so far was current Volvo V70 (had coolant leakage at 30.000 km and one minor suspension fix at 70.000 km). At 100.000 km sensor of screen wash fluid broke down. Such a minor issue, but it affects headlamps wash - as it is not working because car computer thinks, that it is not enough wash fluid left. One more month left until I will change the car.

The most unreliable car I've had was Toyota Avensis 2.2 d-cat. Engine software bug at 0 km :) And so many other software issues with no enough dealer attention - had to get rid of the car after 2 years. Also Saab 9-5 Aero had many repairs, including oil consumption of 1L per 2000 km, which was not fixed under warranty.

Conclusion? The best car is company car :D
