2007 VRS Diesel - Engine Fault: Workshop Help

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Looking for some input from people who have may come across this issue before.

Driving to work this morning I noticed the car was very laggy (turbo would kick in at about 2800 RPM all of a sudden, then lag and kick in again) so i figured maybe the DPF was regenerating howwver further down the road the heater plug light started flashing and the display started saying "Engine Fault: Workshop".

I pulled over knocked it off and on again and was driving fine again i.e. turbo boosting well but cruise control was not working. I got one of my mates to plug it in and no faults were seen - brake lights etc all ok and i had 300 km left in the tank and I think that is suffice for DPF regeneration. Cruise control is now working again also.

So any ideas or have ye seen this before?

What sort of fault code reader was it ? (Was it VCDS)

Not sure of the name of if but can find out...but i do know it is not a cheap diagnostic machine as it cost 5k.

OK. Not sure what the fault code reader is, maybe a VAS machine. I thought only the dealer network had these. Try and get a scan done by either a member who has VCDS or a VAG garage who has VAS. Then post up the results. I will try and help you more. You can do a quick search on the forum and it will give you the VCDS availability map.

Yes it is a VAS machine but will try and identify someone who has a VCDS and see if it shows anything.

Maybe a sticky EGR?

my vrs did exactly this. I had the egr blanked and it fixed it so i'd put money on it being your egr

Yeah it is quite possibly the EGR valve. I would like to see a scan first. You could whip it off and try cleaning it I suppose.

my car had loads of scans whilst doing this and never reported an egr problem

I've currently got something v similar going on in the Golf. I thought it could well be an air leak somewhere or a dodgy vacuum solenoid. However, my dealer thinks dodgy MAF sensor. They've had it for over 2 days now, as they're still not entirely sure. I'm not really that mechanical, but, personally, I'd plump for the air leak. My fault was eventually recorded as 'Turbo Underboost'....best of luck...

Sounds like sticking turbo gains.

mine also came back at one point with boost issues bust mostly no errors.

I fitted a new maf sensor......waste of £100

Another mate of mine plugged it in and it came up with a boosting error...he reckons the DPF was regenerating and the fact i wasn't sparing the turbo at that time it over boosted and then went into limp mode

I doubt it - Overboost fault is normally sticky turbo vanes. Maybe time for a clean.

If it happens again I will get it checked further.....On a side note I seen a 132 white VRS in local skoda dealer two weeks ago and was tempted to say - I'll have one of those please

take your egr off and clean it. Honestly, your issues including the odd boost errors are exactly the same as mine. It was all down to the egr so cleaning it or have it blanked and coded out will fix it

Is this something I could do myself ryan or would I need a mechanic?

Depends how good you are with engines etc. It looked a fiddly job so i just had mibe blanked when the dpf was being removed. There are guides i think

Ive taken the EGR off my pd170 and cleaned it.. its a bit of a pain but if you are reasonable with mechanics its an ok job... i have pictures in my gallery somewhere and there are plenty of threads on this.. mine has been a little laggy again so may pop it off for another clean this weekend and look into the mr muscle in the turbo trick assuming someone replies to my post!!!

There is a thread on the forum about Mr Muscle and the VNT turbo, just do a quick search.

Ah, yes, yet another stuttering 2007 PD170 vRS.... Mine is exactly the same and suffers from this fault occasionally.

Some points to consider:

Tried cleaning the intake system with some EGR 3 spray - waste of time and money as it made no difference and didn't appear to flush out much gunk.

Cleaned my EGR valve by hand with carb cleaner. It was very coked up and was well worth doing to keep it healthy. Unfortunately, when I had the EGR valve off I could see how filthy the intake manifold is, so that will need to be taken off and cleaned next, otherwise the valves will eventually ingest some crud and cause problems.

The stuttering generally occurs after driving the car gently, then trying to use the power. If I drive the car hard the problem doesn't happen. Keeping the boost system working hard seems to keep it in better condition.

A mechanic suggested disconnecting the wire to the MAF sensor to see if that removes the problem, as a simple diagnostic test for that component being the fault (The fuel consumption will go haywire while it is disconnected.)

I have wondered if the problem is with the vac system and the N75 solenoid valve. I might replace that as a fix for mine.

Could it be low fuel pressure, from clogged filters?

Lastly, the Shark remap for the PD170 engine promises to remove the stutter for good, which suggests to me that issue is electronic in nature, rather than mechanical. That suggests the components on my car are all functional but not 'talking' to each other as well as they should.

It's an annoying fault but provides a good excuse to use the power often....

Anyone else got any suggestions of things to check out?

Issue appeared again the last day. I got it plugged in and it said 000665 - Boost Pressure Regulation: Control Range Not Reached. I've a new regulator ordered from the dealer and will have it on thursday. I hope it fixed it caus im only getting about 20mpg at thr minute.
