Removing Clear Plastic Facia instrument panel Fabia MK1

Featured Replies

Hi

The continuing saga of trying to register a LHD hungarian car in the UK.

Even though, My car is not fully MOT'd for the UK, the DVLA require a letter from a garage stating that the speedo must indicate mph, even though it is not needed for its MOT.

I cant replace the speedo with a UK version as it is chipped to the car, but I am allowed to add tranfers to the speedo providing the transfers are on the dial, not on the plastic clear cover.

So I would like to know, how easy to remove the clear facia to get access to the dials on the cluster panel, or are they sealed?

Thanks

PS, how hard is it to remove the instrument cluster in the first place?

Not difficult, lower the steering wheel, pull of the piece of trim, undo 2 torx screws and wriggle the unit out. There are 2 plugs in the back, one just pulls out, the other has an odd swivel type catch to then pull out.

A little more work can get it like this

Thanks Dark Hero.

I think I only need the front off, to add the transfer.

Obviously the instrument panel will need to come out, as your described first

Mark where the needles sit with a bit of masking tape or something, so you know where they sit. Then rotate anti clockwise and pull. They are only held on by friction

Just gently lever them off, I used the flat of a knife to do it.

What transfers are you using, any pics.

Hi Guys

Thanks for your help

The transfers in the end would not be accepted by VOSA.

The transfer kit I bought off Ebay, was not the correct size to make the KPH and MPH match up.

The indvidual transfers for each 10mph, would not be accpeted, it has to be one overlay.

So

I scanned the dialplate

Then in photoshop added the MPH

Then printed it off on thick photopaper.

Then cutaround the print off so all I had left was the grey insert in the dial, which now has MPH on.

I cut the inside of the print off out also. so the engine lights etc could be seen

Then stuck the grey MPH insert as an overlay on to the dialplate.

I used the square edges of the digital mileomoter as the guide to keep the dial in line when sticking on.

Scanning the dialplate, kept the sizes exact.

If someone points me to how to upload images, I will upload a few.

Thanks Again

Mark

OK I think I don't know how to upload imgages.

Sorry about the first 2 images, the plastic facia front stops a clean photo.

The bottom image, is my finished template, although in the end, I cut away the black KPH, so the original KPH shows now, with only the grey KPH being stuck on to the dial

Guide to inserting images in posts

If you send the dashpod to Cluster Repairs in Great Yarmouth they will do this for about £35. They do it all the time. Proper job, MOT pass, no messing about.

[edit]apparently they are now in Enfield, so expect a price increase![/edit]

If I'd know'n, I would have spent my £35.

In fact I could have just sent the dial.

I tried all the used car parts finder sites and the only on that seemed to understand I needed a new dialplate, that matched the existing calibration of KPH was http://www.carsparefinder.co.uk. Can't remember the car breaker on the system. They do sell dialplates on ebay for around £50 plus postage or so.

I have my VOSA mutual recognition certificate now, so fingers crossed the DVLA issue a reg number.

Seems like a lot of hassle you've went to.

You can recode a new set of UK clocks to the car for a load less hassle.

Hope you get sorted with it either way.
