WeMo remote power switch-phone controlled

Featured Replies

I just bought a Belkin WeMo remote controlled power socket and it is brilliant :) It's a little WeMo box that you put into a mains socket and then plug the item you want to control into the WeMo. The instructions are none existent, but it is easy to sort out (I managed) and can set up not only several timer controls, which include individual day settings, but can control the on/off of the socket via my phone as long as it can get on the interweb somehow (even 2G is more than fast enough to work easily). Click on the app and it tells you if the socket is on or off and you just press the appropriate symbol to change this.

It gives me great peace of mind to know I can control a couple of space heaters if I am away from the house for several days and a super cold snap hits (I have had burst pipes before), also I can run several of these little things and so switch on lights and radios etc. It even supports IFTTT which is very clever :)

Not too expensive at £39 I think

I'm watching this to see what people have used IFTTT for.....

I can't really find too many uses for it with the WeMo being currently used as a remote heater switch :) I suppose I could get it to email me and confirm the switch on and off, but the app does that anyway.

Might be more use with a remote video camera that could upload to Dropbox or similar. Anyhoo, the little box works really well :)

I've been looking at the WeMo also.   :)

Looks like a useful little tool that one can add to their home to gain remote access to various electrical items.

I would be able to switch on my kettle while I'm putting Ivor away in the garage to it will be boiling when I come in the back door.   :)

I'm a little confused though....whats the difference between the WeMo switch and the WeMo Insight switch??

WeMo linky

We use one on the coffee machine ha, allows the boiler and group head to warm through before getting home :D

Belkin are rubbish at giving you proper details and instructions with the WeMo:( but from what I gathered from their American site, the 'Insight' switch has a proximity sensor of some sort. I think it can do things like switch on a light when it's dusk too. I guess if it can tell if your phone has just joined the house wifi network it could put your kettle on while you put Ivor to bed?

I had to look super hard to find out what the WeMo plug was rated at. there is a tiny bit on the outside of the box (you really have to look hard) that says it's rated at about 3.6KW (16A) so kettles are it's friend :)

I now have a couple and as I have just been away for a short while, I can say they do work. My next door neighbour thought I was in, but being a bit anti-social :D
