did I just break my abs controller?

Featured Replies

I own a 2009 roomster with esp and 16 inch alloy wheels size 205/45 .

I've had many problems with them and changed all 4 tires twice in less than 100000 kms due to tire balloons forming.

Lastly I've done 3 changes to the car in for short period of time and I think one of them broke my abs controller

1 I changed to non standard tire size 205/55 r16

2 I installed an aftermarket brake pads ebc green stuff

3 changed battery after it worked with diminished capacity for one week.

Then sometime back I hit a speed bump at 70 km/h while breaking. The esp and brake lights lighted up and stayed up since then and the abs system no longer works. The garage says I nned a new abs controller but I'm afraid to get a new one without knowing for sure what broke the old one. Did the non standard tire size do that or the aftermarket breake pads or the faulty battery.

Please help.

What fault codes do you have?

looks like a single issue causing both those. I'd check the fuse for the ABS before anything else, looks like something simple. Fuse number 4 in the dash panel fuse box.

None of the things mentioned in the first post could cause the ABS controller to fail.

+1 for a fuse, but my guess would be the 40A fuse (#10) in the fuse holder on the battery.

#7 in the fuse holder on the battery needs checking too, as it is possible for multiple fuses to blow.

The other two fuses are F4 and F48 in the main fusebox.

I already checked the abs fuses in the main fuse box #4 and #48 and they are fine.

The battery fusebox has only 6 fuses. Is there somewhere else in the engine bay that has more fuses?

I attached a picture of the only fuses I know of above the battery.

To the right of the six big fuse links, you will see six red wires entering the other half of the fusebox.

Checked them all and they look fine. Sadly I think fuses may not be the issue.

Is it possible that the aftermarket break pad sensor malfunctioned and the car wrongly thinks the pads are worn out so its throwing this error?

You can't always tell by looking at them - you need to use a meter on resistance or continuity. Im not convinced they are good.

The wear sensor is not related to the ABS unit - it only goes to the dash.

The next thing to check would the wiring from the battery fuses to the ABS unit and the ground wire(s) from the ABS unit to the earth point.

If it's not the wiring, then the ABS unit itelf is likely faulty.

You were totally right. It was fuses #7 and #10. They were not bad but one of them was not seated properly in its socket. Once I pulled them out and put them in again the dashboard lights went away and the abs is working great.

Really thanks for your help you saved me a lot of money.

Now to give the garage a piece of my mind.

00301 - ABS Return Flow Pump (V39)

008 - Implausible Signal

This fault will occur if the controller can not make any sense of the readings it is getting from the ABS sensors! I had this happen & various lights on the dash lit up after making a left turn a hitting a deep puddle at the entrance to a carpark! Thankfully I have a cheap code reader in the glove box so could read & wipe the codes there & then!

Scares the carp out of you tho!

As for some garages not knowing there job.................Had a local one with the same Bosch diagnostic gear as the main dealers spend several days & £400 failing to find an ABS fault.................Main dealer & £50 fault diagnosed!
