Brake Pad cost? and recommend a Garage in Norwich?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Driving a 08 Fabia 1.2 HTP2, my brake pad warning light came on yesterday evening whilst driving home.

Toward the end of the journey home (a good 30+ miles) the car jolted very slightly on some gear changes and when moving off from a standstill at lights etc - I assume this is either the pads sticking or the lack of pads has damaged my discs?

Was hoping for two things:

  • Somebody to recommend a decent garage in Norwich please?
  • A rough idea what new pads and labour will cost me? (and worse case, new discs too?)

Thanks!!

This is probably the most you can expect to have to pay any place for Discs and Pads..

This will give you an idea of the cost of parts.  Maybe find an Independent to do the work.

Not a Tyres & Exhaust Center though.

Rear Drum brakes.

Best have things checked ASAP.

Can you look yourself and see what you see with the front discs and pads?

Has the car had servicing and Pads checked recently?

This Monte is my first VAG but unless there very different I'd be surprised if you've damaged the discs / sticking brakes if the light has only just illuminated.  I've never had wear indicators on a drum brake but on my 1series there was a good 1000miles left on the pad after the light came on before I changed the pads (even then there was plenty of life left in them but at that point I'd started noticing a perceived lack of bite - it was prob just me but safe is better).

Prob should ninja edit and add that sk4gw is spot on - have them checked.

The car gets a full service and MOT every year (May), the last MOT (May 2013) had an advisory that the front pads were worn. But nothing since then, so they did another 8 months before the light came on!

Jim at Norwich Autocare is a decent chap who is reasonably priced and knows his VAG stuff: 01603 485111

Thanks, will give them a buzz.

I'll drop him at a garage tonight and get it changed/checked out.

The MOT Advisories are often worth paying attention to.

They are not trying to sell you anything, just trying to keep vehicles and road users safe.

Even advice at a service that Pads might be worth having changed are not always Up Selling,

Many Services are only Inspection and report.

Down to the Driver/Owner to consider how the vehicle is used.

** Not sure what type of Full Service you get, Skoda do Minor & Major, Major is an 'Inspection Service',

Rear Drums should come off, and checks and cleaning done, not always are though.**

Did the Mechanic that did the Service advise you the pads were worn as the MOT Examiner did?

Mot, in May, Service in May, so i suppose the car has not covered 10,000 miles in that time,

But thats not something a MOT tester knows as they check a vehicle,

Brake Efficiency and Pad Condition. They can just pass if it is a pass, and Log an Advisory.

Hopefully just new Pads required and a bit of TLC f the Calipers, because they might be a bit sticky.

Is it just new Pads needed then?

Hopefully they are not just changing pads, But cleaning your calipers, greasing the pins.

Their Time, their materials, they need to earn a living, and pay tax.

Maybe just use a place near you and get a relationship going with a garage you can hopefully trust.

Please do not use a Tyre and Exhaust fitting centre, use a place with Motor Mechanics.

I would leave the Garage to get the parts from their supplier,

then they know what they are getting, and they get the correct item.

You really are not saving anything,

unless supplying Specialist Parts their Motor Factor can not supply.

Nothing worse than a simple 30 minute job, go to do it, open the Box supplied by the customer and it is the wrong parts,

car stripped of parts ready to fit new ones, & sitting in the way. till you get them delivered or go pick them up.

PITA really.

You can usually spot wear on the discs as they will be noticeably thicker on the very lip or rim of the disc, and also quite heavily scored around its circumference. Eurocarparts are quite cheap, as are carparts4less. I got ALL four discs, along with front and rear pads, for less then dealers or Kwik-fit quote to change just the front pads. The fronts are so simple to do, although I spent another seven quid on the proper tool to undo the caller bolts, rather then bodge.

I did actually get my local mot tester to do the rear pads, as they were nowhere near needing doing when I did the fronts, and the rear discs were absolutely fine too, so I have those in storage. The rears, changed by the tester, cost me £50 labour but worth it as the handbrake needs re-setting etc and it was mid december and I did not fancy laying out in the street, in the cold, fiddling around nd scraping my knuckles, for the sacks of that!

For the discs etc, if you buy online, you get a better price then going into the showroom, even if you just use click and collect. They have promo codes on as I write! I would buy, then get them fitted, if you are unsure as to how to as anyone will charge knock up prices to supply!

Yes one of the reasons I was considering supplying my own is because there's a sale on brake pads at the moment + I have a 30% off code.

The garage also initially asked if I was bringing my own parts, so I don't think they care.

Decided to take SK4GW's advice and let the garage do it as I'd like to build up a relationship with a new garage long term, and my MOT is due in March, it would be nice to find somebody I trust before then.

So left the car at the garage today to get new pads fitted.

Just got a call saying they've changed the pads and the discs....now I don't know much about cars, so it could be that the discs also needed changing, fair enough, but you'd think they'd give me a call first?

Anyway, £145inc VAT for the whole lot (front discs, pads and labour) seems pretty reasonable assuming it did actually need discs and for the extra £45 for new discs I don't think I'll be complaining.

Sorry to come into this topic late - haven't been on the site for a while - for Skoda service/repair in Norwich I use Autotech, who are VAG specialists, I would not go anywhere else.
