DSG not engaging. engine still on.

Featured Replies

Hey all.

I have an Octavia MY10 1.8DSG TSi, I love the thing 100% +/- .00000000000001% of the time!

Is anyone aware of why the DSG would not engage? There's this thing that's occurred about 4x times and I haven't been able to find anyone here describing the same symptoms. I'll try to describe it now:

Waiting at lights etc to go, in 1st, everything normal. The engine is still running, accessories and radio is up etc. The lights change or a break in traffic etc, I try to go. Nothing changes. I cannot recall the engine changing revs when I jump on the gas. I cannot accurately recall - I haven't had the chance to record events or experiment due to the stress of being effectively broken down at a green light etc.

I do know I'm not stalled though and I find I quickly recover by cycling the shifter to park and back to D(rive) and takeoff like it never happened.

Annoying in traffic and potentially unsafe I suppose. I'm sure I give people behind me brown pants for a second to see reverse lights flash on just as a light changes to green and they are rearing to go.

It's only happened (so far) at a set of lights or stop line. 2x, I know for sure I had only just begun my trip.

I know it's not stalled and I've had that before too. I think that was when I had a flat / almost flat battery due to leaving my dashcam in for 3 days, not driving etc. I've got a new battery and the alternator is fine and now I unplug the 12v accessories when i get out of the car. I haven't had a stall since the new battery and unplugging things.

If I can't get advice, at least I can document a workaround in case it happens to you. (cycle the stick)

Attached an image because... I still love her.

How many miles has the DSG box done and has it had it 40,000 mile DSG oil changes ?

Also, look on the VCDS user map and ask one of the member to scan the car for you, most will do it for a few  tokens.

Could be a mechatronic issue, fluid issue etc.

If revs dont change then its a throttle issue not dsg?

Brake light switch intermittent, so not throwing a code, but not switching off as soon as you lift your foot off the brakes (assuming you aren't using the handbrake) ?

I would suggest getting the scan done ASAP, at least then the OP will hopefully know what they are dealing with. BTW the brake light switch could be monitored by VCDS whilst getting a scan done, good shout though Gti Jazz Blue.

64 373.76 kilometer oil change? I'd guess it's never been done then, I just rolled past 50,000 km (31,068 miles).

I've had the car for a full year now, received it at 30,000km and it still had factory warranty until recently, has had all the service stamps in the book and I've serviced it 2x now. The last time they applied a DSG firmware update.

Unfortunately for me I'm in Australia. I will hang my head in shame if I have to, honestly re: skodas, this is the forum to be on and I've lurked a while already.

If you say so (not being a smartass, I don't know). I do have a letter regarding a DSG part recall, I finally have my parts available and just need to get time to take the car in now. That issue would disable me completely - so I'm pretty sure that's not it?

I don't get much time to play as I scramble a recovery. As I cycle the stick though I do clear whatever gremlin it was. I don't have traction control off and I don't think it revs over 1000rpm with foot on the brake, I suppose it might not detect the brake coming off or something. I imagine I'd be back on the brake as I cycle past reverse though so it gets complicated to think about what happens.

You are correct, I don't use a handbrake at lights or stop lines. I don't think I've ever seen my dash brake light on.

Thanks everyone. I didn't see any VCDS users in Australia on the map :) - I think I'll just have to ask an authorized skoda service center to do these scans, and beg to do the DSG oil early.

The Skoda service mechanics here don't do stuff even if you beg them. If it's not scheduled they don't touch it. Maybe that tune will change now I'm out of factory warranty? I don't believe you can over service a cars fluids...

Surely any mechanic will do what you ask (i.e. DSG oil change) if your willing to pay for it?. Once they have conducted the scan it may point to the mechatronics unit or another fault, but if it doesn't I would change the fluid early and see if that help. If  you google DSG oil change there are several youtube clips that show you what to do and how it is done. A point to note though is only use genuine parts for this service as I have heard that the box does not react well to different brands of oil.

DSG oil change is a very specific process. The gearbox oil must be maintained at a set temperature, and the correct process must be followed. Failure to do so could leave you with too much or too little oil in the box, my local VAG specialist charges £149 for the DSG oil change. Not every garage will have the specific tools to monitor the gearbox oil temperature. The garage I used to use for servicing in Stevenage would not even attempt it, and they are ex Skoda.

I would have thought that an authorised Skoda service centre would have the tools to monitor the gearbox oil, it can be done with VCDS. I make the assumption that it could also be done with VAS. As an authorised service centre they really should have at least one of the two systems.

No 40K oil change required, the 1.8TSi runs the 7spd dry clutch box. Additionally, I vaguely recall the problem being described in another thread/elsewhere, as being down to the Mechatronics unit

This may be a costly repair then.

Yes, it is the 7spd. I guess I'll live with it until it becomes a bigger problem, I will not be thrilled at a big costly fix for a car only months out of warranty, with only 50k (31K miles) on the clock. Just how costly is costly?

Can I assume the "Mechatronics" is the "gearbox control units"? If that's the case, I might have some hope that it will be fixed with the recall maintenance/service.

The authorized local dealer here has booked me in 4 weeks - they claim the process is only done by specialist and takes about 3 hours.

Addendum: Yes, you would think mechanics would just take money and do requested work but this is the second Skoda dealer that had declined changing the DSG fluids for me. I wanted to know all fluids history when I acquired the vehicle last year... that was local and capital city.

Just an update. I had my DSG recall service sometime Feb. Can't complain about getting a free DSG oil change that was almost due anyhow. Nice to know all the fluids history and are up to date.

Hasn't happened again. Yay. But. I did buy a charger and top the battery off, my GPS melted and pushing it back in cracked the display - so it's out.

Aaand the plug for my dashcam popped the end off and shot out the fuse - so accessories aren't being used for now except an occasional phone charge.

Anyhow, all good so far - Skoda <3 :)

  • 3 weeks later...

hopefully they fixed the issue when it went in for the recall.

if it happens again, im pretty sure you get 2 years warranty with all new parts supplied and installed by Skoda (In Australia) so get onto them and don't tell them it was happening before. just mention the recall being performed and they will **** bricks and look at it for you :)

FYI, there are good VW independent workshops up your way if you need one. check out the Australia forum - not sure I can link it here - but it has to do with 'vw watercooled' and its an 'org' in Australia :P
