"Engine Fault - Workshop!" & Flashing Glow Plug Light

Featured Replies

Hello All,

On the drive to work this morning, I got "Engine Fault - Workshop" showing on the advisory screen, the engine when into "get me home" mode (loss of acceleration), and the glow plug light was flashing. It happened when cruising at 60mph and I hadn't been over-revving on accelerating, the water temperature was the normal temperature.

I pulled over and shut down, restarted and everything worked normally. Then about 20 mile later it happened again... again, cruising at 60mph.

It's a 10 plate Octavia 1.6 TDi CR 105PS, 76k miles on the clock, dealer serviced (last serviced mid-December, its 3rd service).

Any ideas what might be going on? I'm getting the diagnostic kit on it tomorrow, but would be good to know if anybody else has had similar problems.

Cheers,

Paul

I've not had much experience with the 1.6 TDI CR engine, however the circumstances you describe sound remarkably similar to the 1.9pd sticky turbo vane problem. I have heard that you particular engine does seem to have problem with the EGR valve.

First things first. Get a scan done by one of the members with VCDS (you can search for map on the forum).

Once you have you scan results then post them up and I will try and help you if you still require it.

Thanks radders567. I've found a work colleague has access to engine diagnostics equipment and has offered to plug it in tomorrow.

On a promising note, the 67 mile drive home tonight was uneventful, no warning lights, no loss of power.

Will see what comes of the diagnosis tomorrow and will post the results.

My guess would be the EGR having a dicky fit, but it is just that - "A guess"

So, VCDS hooked up at lunchtime and it showed intermittent fault on EGR sensor #1 and #2 (good guess Anddenton!). I will ask my colleague if he can post the results up on here.

Fault came up 4 times on the way home tonight, so getting to be a persistent little intermittent fault.

Could it be replacement sensors required, or the EGR itself? And any idea on rough damage to the credit card?

More likely a gummed up EGR than dodgy sensors. Not changed mine yet so don't know what the damage is but I would guess £200 or £300 at an indy.

Hi all,

I scanned the car with Vag Com last night, and the faults are shown below.... Me and the OP would be much appreciated if anyone could shed some light on the issue....

Yes I would Anddenton, this does look like it could be a gummed up EGR valve rather than the sensors.

Brown_d9, I would suggest that you strip the EGR valve off and have a look see, it may just require cleaning. Although a few forum members have had trouble with the EGR valve so it may eventually need replacing.

Had a chat with my local Skoda garage last night and git a quote for EGR valve replacement. £760... Due to it being "integral part of EGR cooler so that will need replacing too. And you need to drop the suspension to get to it"...

Nearly ran into the lorry in front of me when he said that!

Oh dear, I would do some more shopping around. That sounds quite expensive to me.

Hello !

I have the same problem and changed EGR valve and cooler but the problem is still there.

How did you solve your problem?
