Intro & a couple of questions.

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I've just bought a 60 plate Octy 2 1.6 Tdi Greenline as a daily driver. Getting rid of my MG ZR as whilst its fun to drive its a love hate relationship that has more and more hates as time goes on. The lack of refinement was the biggest downer.

Anyways, i have always liked the look of Octy's (Octies?) so a vrs may be on the books if goes well with the eco machine. I have a few questions though before i collect the car at the weekend.

It has the Bolero Stereo fitted which is great but a step down from my Parrot Asteroid in terms of connectivity. As such ill be putting all my music on SD rather than relying on bluetooth streaming and multiple USB inputs. I just wanted to check if there were and file/folder number limits, what drive format is better for the system (exFAt of Fat32) and also if the system recognises and navigates using metadata or if it uses the actual folders and file names.

My other question is that i have a spare set of HID Bulbs and Ballasts. I have read that they will probably throw up a bulb error on the Canbus system. Is there any likelyhood of them working without fitting a resistor in line?

Thanks all in advance

I believe it is FAT32 with a maximum card size of 32GB. I think it navigates by alphabetical file name but it does display metadata on screen when playing. Non canbus HIDs work but they need coding in or they start causing problems, see thread http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/264447-hid-aftermaket-kit-help-for-definitive-how-to/. Some Canbus enabled lights have damaged controller units and wiper motors??  in the past and I think are best avoided because of this. Oh and welcome :hi:

I was beginning to think you lot were an unfriendly bunch  :whew: lol

Cheers for the answers. I kinda figured the HID's, im not overly fussed on them though as i do very little night driving on unlit roads these days. As for the SD i can get preparing it for my vast collection. I just hope the unit has the latest update and doesn't take ages to do anything.

Do folders work alright on the SD i.e if i arrange songs as [Artist] > [Album] > [song] in folders. Will i be browsing it like this or will i just see a massive list of songs?

I use 1 layer (or whatever the term is) of folders only so I see a list of folders at the highest level then songs on opening each folder. Subfolders can be used but I don't know how many levels  the unit can navigate (more than just 1 tho'). I know early models struggled and had a software/firmware update to improve things. I also use a 16GB card because some reported problems with a 32GB even though I've never actually tried. On the plus side it operates flawlessly and instantaneously. If I want more storage then carrying a second SD card isn't the end of the world!

 Thanks again.

One other thing. I have been reading about VCDS. I currently have torque installed on my Nexus 5 and use a bluetooth OBDII adapters, i take it as this supports VAG protocols it will read engine data and fault codes but not much more? Is VCDS readily available as PC software or does it require a  specific reader?

The link below covers what VCDS is and what it can do. If you want full functionality you need to buy an appropriate interface adapter and download the VCDS software onto a laptop or PC. VCDS-lite is a cheaper option but has limited functionality.

For HID's London Colour on ebay seem to get good write ups on here, but as stated above you will need the non-canbus versions and have them coded in by someone with VCDS.

Oh, and WELCOME!

Folders work fine. I have mine arranged like that.
