Hit a Pot Hole

Featured Replies

Evening,

I'm looking for a little advice of you all. I hit a pothole around 3 days ago and it burst the tyre on my Monte. It was on a motorway, and I was going around 50MPH, the speed limit when bang. A minute later my steering when spongy and once I got out the tyre was flat. I had to get the tyre replaced as it had burst the side wall.

I am going to claim from the local authority up here, which are ScotlandTranServ. My question is do I just claim for the tyre, or do you all think I should go get the tracking done also and try and claim back for that to sure its correct, as it was one hell of a thud. Thankfully the alloy is ok. I have pictures of the pothole, and the picture of my damaged tyre, and a receipt for the tyre.

Would appreciate some tips, as I've never had to do anything like this before.

Cheers,

Stu.

I helped a member get a claim for 2 tyres blowing out on the A90,

I went and got the photos, and BEAR paid out.

But the Road Had been Inspected, Marked with Paint, Temporary Repair carried out, then opened up and damage caused.

Your claim will require to be the cost of the Damage and repair covered by the receipts.

So just gather your evidence, make the request on there Inspections of the road, repairs or not,

& make your Clam if there is one.

I had a Blow Out in Huge Road Repairs in the outside lane that opened on the A9, there was no claim i could make,

the work had been done and opened up again over a 24 hour period.

Use any of the Pothole Sites online to see if pictures are already up of the area and the holes,

and who else is claiming if anyone.

On my previous car I claimed (successfully) for two new front tyres (and tracking) even though the pothole only wrecked one tyre - my argument was that you should replace both tyres on an axle at the same time. I also successfully claimed for a taxi to take me into Glasgow Central station (it was 5am) and for my return train fare to Liverpool (I'd only just set out to drive to John Lennon International to catch a flight - I didn't have time to change the wheel).

Thanks everyone. I will do my best to try and have the tracking done within the next day or so if possible as I do feel its out a little. It happened on the M80 just before junction 1.

Does anyone know how much tracking should cost?

About 30 quid to get tracking done.

Were you near Falkirk.

eg,

Check Fix my Street.com,   3 large pot holes

http://fixmystreet.com/reports/Falkirk

Just try and see what comes up for where you were.

It is not necessarily just adjusting Tracking, they can check and adjust Tracking if thats as simple as it is,

but you are looking for actual damage and anything bent, so best get prices where you are going.

EDIT, sorry, up the wrong dreel.

Was that near the Blochairn, Carntyne Junction.?

It was just before the Riddrie junction George heading into Glasgow. I will get the tracking done if its only around £30, just to make sure everything is ok and I'll try claim back. Thanks for the help.

As the post below yours says, about £30, but if you go to a garage you know I'm sure they could do it for you for a special price, of say, £100.  ;)

In Scotland the Trunk Road Network is Contracted out and you claim off the Company Responsible for the maintenance and inspection on that road.

It is considerably easier than claims against different Councils for the roads they are responsible for.

Im going to call around tomorrow and get some prices for tracking from local garages. I don't really know if its needed, but it was a really hard thud and enough to split the tyre side wall so no doubt it may be off slightly.

Pothole + Monte = ALMIGHTY CRASH.

Every time.

I think maybe mine has evened itself out, as I have no adverse effects (wobble, tyre scrub etc) after 18 months and 17000 miles, 16000 feel like they involved alercations with the crappy Wilts/Hants border "roads".

Situation has improved immeasurably since I no longer need to do the nursery run for my youngest daughter - she's in school now and that isn't situated 10 miles (and 25 minutes) from the real world!

Sooo,

Went and got the wheels re-balanced which needed done said the garage, and also they said my tracking was out.

Got the tracking adjusted, and noticed after driving out the garage when driving straight my steering wheel was off centre, sitting to the right. Went back again and they said they have adjusted and went a 70 mile drive to St Andrews and its the same problem, not as bad but when driving straight the steering wheels if off centre, and needs to be positioned to the right.

I'll need to go back again tomorrow, but how can they not get something like this right the first or even second time? Is it really that hard?

Now they could mess about for ever to get the Tracking/Alignment correct.

To have the Steering wheel perfect to suit as being dead centre rather than i little ticky bit out.

This will get flamed,

but since it was off, and needed adjusting/correcting.

If the car runs straight now,

i straighten the steering wheel, by taking it off, i do not go re adjusting the steering geometry.

You can and should, but i just dont, i see it is correct, and move the Steering wheel..

But then 'they' should have tried the car on a test Drive after Adjusting and they would have known the Steering wheel was now off centre.

A technician or mechanic should check their work before handing back to a customer.

They did the work, they are responsible, they should take pride in a good job.

Maybe ask the Workshop Manager, or the Dealership Manager,

if it is their practice to work on steering, brakes etc and not road test a car after doing the job.

Cant they just park the car with the steering straight, then use the tracking device to straighten all the wheels? I think theyve made a fluff up

I know its just the hassle of going back for a third time. It was a 'mcconechys' garage. I may have made a mistake by going there, I'm sure they are very good at other things but tracking doesn't seem to be a strong point for the one I went to.

Also I'm in two minds to get it checked elsewhere with the proper equipment.

Pretty sure 'selecta tyre' use laser allignment systems. However iv never had it done by them, so not sure about how good or expensive they are

It certainly is not rocket science.

When adjusting the tracking, the steering wheel should be centralised inside the car first.

Then if the tracking is out, any person worth his salt would be able to tell which wheel is pointing the wrong way. Even if nes' a quick measure will tell you.

So you bring the wheel that's showing out in or out on the adjusters. Roll car back & forwards a few times to centralise wheels & recheck S/wheel & tracking.

After adjustments even on the ramp the car should be rolled & rechecked.

May take 20 mins longer, but you end up with a much better alignment.

Do it right first time, every time. That way you end up with a good reputation. People will always come back to you.

CD

You see that is why you should go to a garage with Mechanics or Technicians who are Trained and supervised,

rather than Learn on the Job Tyre & Exhaust Fitters.

That do a bit of this and that.

The car needed inspected to see if any damage had been sustained.

Thanks for the replies. I don't know if I will be taking it back for a third time to be honest. I have sent a claim form in to TranServScotland for the pot hole incident so hopefully will get the £24 back that mcconechys charged.

Will source a reputable place to get it done asap.

Just a update to say its all sorted. Got my money back from the garage that mucked up my steering wheel, and went to another one which came highly recommended, 1 hour later everything is sorted and they even double checked the tracking and all is fine. Peace of mind again!

Could I point out, that to try to overcome an 'off centre steering wheel' as described earlier in this post by moving the wheel on it's shaft IS NOT ON.

Please everyone do not give any credence to that suggestion whatsoever.

Proper four-wheel laser tracking and correction will return the wheel to its proper position. The suggestion of changing the wheel position just hides a tracking error (as anyone using wheel turning plates will tell you.)

As a time served mechanic with 35 years in the workshop, I feel very annoyed that some might be mislead by a post in this forum.

There you go then,

thats a man that knows telling you, ignore what i said, i do.

After checking that the Tracking is all correct and there is no mechanical damage and the alignment is correct.

Do it right and do it once, like the the post above says.

Wouldnt worry about it. You cant be expected to know everything!
