Featured Replies

Just a quick one, which sealent should I buy from screwfix to fix the rear door leak? I get a discount as my sister works there

Cheers

Plumbers Gold. But apparently the best stuff is something from Shell. Can't remember what it's called though.

+1 for Plumbers Gold.

But AFAIK Screwfix don't stock it.

Shell Wet Seal & Fix its called. About £18 a tube.

Yeah I know. I'm hoping Jars has some left over I can nab. Not ever needed to do my carriers though, they've never leaked. I think the problem became more prevalent when they changed from bolts to rivets :(

When my mate bought his years ago (he still has it aswell), in his paperwork his seals were done on a recall when the car was 6months old. Ive seen the paperwork aswell. Strange because i disnt think they done a recall. Oh well.

Recalls tend to only be for things with safety implications.  Bad as the leaks can be, I can't actually imagine a drowning incident in a footwell.

As for which sealant, the longer this thread runs, the more different opinions you'll hear and the more confused you'll be.  Don't buy a cheap one just 'cos it's cheap, that's all I'll say.

Geocel roofers seal, wet or dry, sticks to galvanised steel?

I used roofing sealant, on the basis if its designed for roofs it must be pretty effective..

That's what I'm thinking johnno

I used plumbers gold on the doors on our Leon but ran out when the Octavia front passenger door started leaking. I got some sort of rooting sealant and that seems to have done the job, it's supposed to works even on damp surfaces.

This is an actual photo of ne last week

Swmbo's last vRS had paperwork for warranty work /recall to have rear door, seals, done, so id suggest it was prevelant at one time.

As a roof rack user on my Octavia mk1 (non railed) I have after 15 years started to get a soggy floor, on checking the outer door seal that sits just inside the roof and door fram has come adrift. There looks to be a sealant and bonding tape of some kind, has anyone bought this if so where from. I like to try and keep it original and my guess is that after 15 years of disturbance the joining sealant has rightfully given up.

Let me know if you have some or know where I can buy new and strip it out to refresh. Thanks
