how much oil consumption is normal, and some smoke?

Featured Replies

hi guys, after spending a load of money on go faster bits ive noticed when after a few mins on idle some smoke, and a bit wiffy..... :-(

now then, im told these like oil, but to me not quite right...

orange oil light just came on so im going to buy a top up, but what am i looking at here please?

im thinking onne of 2 things,,, valve stem seals or turbo oil seals....

please help me, i have only had the car a week and i use this for carrying my children around i so hope its nowt serious

thanks in advance

They should only use minimal oil between servicing. And no smoking at all. Need to get it professionally diagnosed.

mine burns a little oil with decat pipe but not when the catalytic converter is in. I reckon it must be to do with the reduced backpressure.

I'd make sure to replace the oil pickup pipe in the sump too if it hasn't been done recently. It has been known to clog up and cause the oil pressure to drop, killing turbos.

Anything up to 1 litre every 1000km  (600 miles roughly) is permissible according to the book.

Not good... just drove to the garage near me and left it run. Smokin like fuk!

Can't really tell what colour... Not white like head gasket I know that much. Car still feels quick

Put it this way mine used oil for years and still ran fine.

These days it it's a different story it's old with hard milage, stop start for 125k so you can double that for the type of driving it's seen.

Top it up and note how many miles until the warning light comes on thats about a litre used.

I'm told the valve seals suffer on these with age.

I put a ltr in earlier tonight mate after Orange light came on dash... But after the ltr was put in, it didn't go back out.! :-(

Really thinking the worst and I am gutted to say the least because I wanted one of these for years and now I have one I'm starting to think why. Why did I even contemplate? :-(

Think it's worth pointing out that when I accelerate... No smoke or non I can see... And nobody I know who have driven behind me have mentioned it except when on idle for more than a few mins.

Turbo seals maybey?

Are they expensive to buy?

How difficult are they to do please?

Oil pickup pipe needs doing

What level is the dipstick reading? I keep mine 2/3rd of the way up the hatched area on it and it's fine.

I assume you checked but just incase the light came on and you bunged in a litre and have overfilled it?

Orange is oil level sensor

Red is pressure

On first start up smoke it will be oil stem seals leaking

Oil level is Fine. Just blow max Mark. After I topped it up last night.! But Orange light hasn't gone out still.!

Clive... started it up this morning and not excessively Smokey mate.. more condensation to be honest.. But once warmed up and got to destination, Sat idling, she was smoking.!

I am starting to think a new turbo is needed to be honest :-(

Car only on 104,000 aswel

mine uses 1l every 4000km and I don't really care.

Engines runs perfect,no oil leaks,no oil in the IC . At next oil change I'll use this ,I read only good things

Turbo's seem quite reliable on these, mines done 165k and still going strong (touches wood !!)

Could be the seals though, if you whip the botton IC pipe off and have a look how much oil is in the IC, if it pours out then it could be the seals.

Other suspects are piston rings, valve seals, could also be the PCV system blocked and forcing oil to blow back through the engine.

But does it smoke on idle when warm? Because to have excessive oil consumption without external leaks there must be smoke to signify it being burned

Have you fitted the de-cat yet ??

The cat will hide a hell of a lot of smoke.

Hi Dave, I'm going to have to investigate the pcv system mate... And also take off bottom intercooler hose

I cut the old cat open, smashed the guts out and welded shut as a temp measure until my 3' downpipe decat comes in post..

That could be it so, mine used to smoke when I had 0w-30 oil in it and no cat but I couldn't see any when the cat was in.

I run it on 5w-40 now and haven't noticed any since and not using much either.

It was quite smokey really (embarrassing to sit at traffic lights at times and stinking!) but that is a year and 20k miles ago so I put it down to her not liking the oil or maybe it just had a blocked crankcase vent valve that started working again.

I'm pretty sure mine was not valve stem seals as it never smoked before around 5 minutes from cold.

Harsh !!!

Did you flog the guts at the scrappy ? I hear they are worth around £40.

no,no smoke at all.Not if I start it in the morning after sitting for few days.

No smoke under hard acceleration or high speed (I put my friend to drive behind me)

I checked the turbo and is bone dry....so I gave up worring about it.

Anyway 1l / 4 000 km is something you cannot neglect

I'm going to check all the breathers ext as soon as I get 5 mins.. either that or if it serious drive it till the thing dies then swap put the engine for a Leon unit and use as an excuse to go power chasing hehe

As I said though, I'm pickled because smoke is only on idle and only when warm.. nothing when driving at all. In fact when at idle, if I hold the throttle as if I'm driving, smoke clears... very peculiar lol

But as you say, it is quite embarrassing if Sat in traffic an  an  starts doing it :-o
