Ford Remapping

Featured Replies

I/we are about to get a 1.8 diesel S max, I am looking into getting it remapped. Looked at superchips, celtic tuning and a few others. Anyone got any thoughts on reputable firms to use. S'chips say 20bhp more but celtic say 45bhp.

I am in hertfordshire but will travel upto 100 miles.

Thanks

Steve

Monotune do Ford re maps which honour the manufactures warranty so worth a look if the car is in warranty?

Be amazed if Mountune do one for the old 1.8 TDCI diesel lump!

Superchips are 'ok' from experience. The Bluefin device is useful at best. Celtic over quote by some degree, the map itself is fairly aggressive. My current Ford TDCI is 20bhp and 15lb/ft down on what they say it will be with one of their stage one maps in place. Personally id be phoning Shark Performance if I was doing it now. :)

Monotune dont do the s max. I will speak to shark then. Thanks for the replies

Avoid Celtic at all costs, speaking for personal experience after buying a car with one of their maps on!

Will do matt. Thanks Josh, it seemed strange they were quoting 20bhp more than anyone else.

The biggest bhp increase doesnt make it the best map

Superchips are known to be quite safe maps which is what i'll be going for on my new car. Safe level of tune :)

Jam sport do a lot of fords

.....celtic say 45bhp.

Not a chance, needs some serious head work and a big turbo to get anything more the 15-20bhp extra out of these.

I had a 1.8 TDCI Focus 113bhp and 184 lb ft. I replaced the turbo and intercooler hoses with silicone after the rubber originals perished (they were half the price of replacement Ford items) and took it for a map at SP Tuning in Hinckley. He was straight down the line with me and told me not to expect big numbers because these engines aren't capable of a big increase. My stock car dyno'd at 114.9 bhp and 222 lb ft. SP's map gave 131 bhp and 266 lb ft but transformed the car. Stock, I got about 90-100bhp around 3800-4500 rpm but after the map, it held the peak 131 almost to the redline yes, in a way, you'll get an extra 45bhp from Celtic but it won't be over peak.

Got rid of all of the flat spots and gave very usable power, especially in 4th and 5th (mine was a 5 speed and a negative point was it highlighted the lack of 6th gear).

I wish I'd kept the graph - the torque curve was like table mountain.

Worst map I've ever had and they had 2 attempts.

Try and find an evolution chips dealer, i had a quick look on the site and the do cater for your model, plus they have dealers in reach of you, npt sure if you know but they are owned by motorsports developments and they are a big name in Ford tuning and very well respected.

If it's the 1.8 TDCI, then be careful as there is a deliberate lack of torque very low down to prevent damage to the DMF.

Of course a good mapper will know this :)

In 4 years thats the first bad thing I've heard about them! At least they refund you if you're not happy. Was that on the focus?

I took mine to RS tuning in Leeds, my Focus 1.8 tdci and it made 244ft/lb of torque and 143bhp.

Incredibly happy with their service and I kinda wish i'd kept the car now. It was just so driveable!

Hey John, I think I rememeber your focus from DetailingWorld? Was it an estate? Remember your street quite well too haha

Yes Dan that was mine!

Great car that but my VRS is definitely better. I'm sure there's a pic in my thread of my street! Are you in a Skoda now?

No it was on the Skoda Matt. You get a refund within a certain time period, and it never really got to the refund stage - I spoke to Mike (who seems like a good bloke to me), who had the car reflashed with a modified map after I complained of a degree of hesitation and a fault code for HPFP issues. This was the dyno result (Motech is the red line, APR stage 1 is the blue).

That map was never really right - the fuelling issue went away with the APR map, I had a couple of chats with Mike and he always maintained it was the induction kit on the car but it was just the same with the stock airbox, but it logged massive boost spikes and over fuelling and by the time I'd discovered all that, it was past the refund stage.

I kind of think this is what happens when you use a tuner that does a bit if everything rather than specialising in one area.

I took my focus 1.8 tdci to p torque, not sure if they are still going? My car had a strange flat spot at around 1300 rpm which I wanted fixing as well as a bit more oomph. The flat spot is still there but once moving is much snappier than before. Went from 110 bhp to 139 bhp at 3900 rpm and 190 lbs to 244 lbs at 2600 rpm.

Ah I see, that's a shame, I've only really had dealings with diesels but Mike has looked after me with tweaks and bits on the Fabia. I agree about going for a specialist, locally r-tech seem to have a good rep with 1.8t and 2.0t mapping.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I will go for the superchips map as they are local.

Hi,

Did you have the remap done?  I have just purchased the same vehicle and find the power delivery painful!  the flat spots are far too big!

How did you get on and where did you get it done?

Cheers

Pete

As Josh said avoid Celtic tuning like the plague.

My map wasn't brilliant from them but my brother's was truly cowboy tuned.

My brother has a 6spd 1.9tdi octavia and they put a 4spd automatic map on and upped the injectors to dangerous levels
