Potential failures after a stage 1 remap

Featured Replies

The clutch is an obvious weak point after a remap, but what else can go wrong, or has broken? What are the other weak links in the tsi power train?

Hi Stever750,

In all honesty, the VAG transmission in the vRS is fairly reliable but you should be mindful that some tuning companies can go overboard to the detriment of your transmission and clutch.  So whoever you choose to increase the performance of your vRS TSI, make sure you absolutely grill them to pieces!

We provide a full custom in-house remap service along with a digital multi-channel tuning box for your vehicle.  I know you are in Caerphilly but if it’s ever convenient for you, you are welcome to come in for a chat and a coffee. Give us a call if you have any questions - 01245 924 401.

Regards,

Steve

Has 'tdi-tuning', done a Stage 1 Map on the ECU of a 1.4 TSI CTHE Engine as fitted to the mk2 Fabia vRS late 2012 on ,

Cupra 2013 on, or Polo GTI with a CTHE Engine ?

Thanks,

Re-map,  i am not aware of any of the others, APR, REVO or Shark having Re-Mapped a CTHE 1.4 TSI Twincharger engine and wondered if you have had anything to do with one yet.

Plenty of the earlier CAVE have been done.

I know we've all got a living to make, but none of this answers my question! I already know where I'd get my tsi done, decision made with the previous TFSI, so perhaps the question should be what are the weak points of the engine in approximate order that a remap can affect. Other than clutch. Is if the turbo? Bottom end? Oil circulation/cooling? Valvetrain? It can't be bullet proof for sure. We know that the timing chain has been an issue on a few cars, but difficult to see how a remap could make that more likely.

Can you say what car and engine you have, and what age and miles.

Is it a Octavia vRS ?

Here is an example of a REVO Bulletin for the 1.4 TSI which has know problems.

The Bosch MED17 ECU used on the VAG CTHE engine comes in many variants, some of which can't currently (Jan 2014) be reprogrammed. Unfortunately when this type of issue occurs, the only way to distinguish which ECU model you have is by removing the security "muzzle" retaining the ECU and reading the long code on top of the ECU housing. Then once the code has been confirmed, any good tuner with Tri-core tuning ability will be able to confirm the results.

There is a lot to consider and research to do before remapping an ECU these days. Long gone are the days of simple OBDII writes on new vehicles!

Although there are known faults with the standard vehicle (namely those already in the public domain) we have not seen anything that has been caused by remapping by reputable tuners.

Keep us updated on how you get on.

Thanks,

Steve

George,

We currently do offer a plug in tuning system for the 1.4 found in the Mk2 vRS and as may have read we have partnered with Shark Performance on the latest 2.0 TSI found in the Octavia vRS. We do have access to a new Polo GTI and plan on sending this down to a shark over the coming months so we have some concrete figures and gains.

Out of the box the claimed gains are + 27ps and 40nm

Fitting instructions are available here : https://db.tt/wCGEeiPQ

I don't know what hardware/programme/software Ben at Shark Performance used, but he was able to confirm quickly that the MED17 ECU fitted to my 2011MY 1.8TSI engine is encrypted without physically accessing the ECU as described above.

We're running several cars with our K04 conversion at between 320-360bhp. 360bhp is the limit of the standard fuel system and we're currently working on our injector upgrade. Our own Golf was the test bed for this and tested it certainly was.

Thanks Ben for the first sensible answer. So the basic engine should be capable of handling a lot more torque

Honorary,

Yes the 2011 MED17 ECU is no problem and accessed via the diagnostics port.  However, the 2012 in question is a different kettle of fish.  Always happy to help.  Any questions, please feel free to give us a call - 01245 924 401
